Sorry I cannot find the thread anymore, nor can I remember who was the OP. It was about Aspartame (I think it was the fact that they had given it a new name to fool people avoiding it) and amongst the posts was a link about bad effects it could have.

For over a year I had felt I had a personality transplant, and definitely not a good one. GP ruled out depression and said I was most probably exausted. I felt tired yes but also very aggressive all the time even to the people close to me that I absolutely adore. Also felt that everybody hated me.

Now I have totally stopped aspartam (I was sweetening most of my hot drinks with it)and a month or so on I am so pleased with the difference. Even the Dcs have noticed that I am "nice" again. In fact I cannot remember having shouted at them in the last few weeks at all.

So again Thank you, a 1000X

Really?! I drink about 4 pints of orange sqash a day, I wonder if it is affecting me?

IMoveTheStars · 08/04/2010 12:40

wow, that's amazing!

lifeas3plus1 · 08/04/2010 12:44

Thats good.

My brother has had numerous blood and diabetes tests due to constant hand shaking, Unable to concetrate, Sleeping loads, Moody amongst other things.

The Dr put it down to him being a moody teenager.

I told mum and brother to cut out Aspartame from everything.

The change in my brother in just 1month was amazing.

gorionine · 08/04/2010 12:47

I do not know coco, some juice have sweetners that are not aspartam and might be ok.

When I first started to "feel better", I thought it was just wishfull thinking but as it has now been several weeks I think there really was a link between the way I felt and the amount of aspartam I was having. It is not "proven research " I suppose but I feel so much better I could not not share.

The other good thing is I did not replace aspartam by real sugar and am now having tea/coffee without anything else in it. I got used to it much quicker than I thought as well so have not replaced a bad thing(for me) with another bad thing (for me)IYSWIM.

I might try another type, that was interesting thanks for posting.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 12:49

Really?

I drink about a litre of diet coke every day and use sweeteners.

Could this be why I can be a miserable stroppy cow?

Please can someone be kind and link to the original thread (can't find it, am dumbass with searching for links)

gorionine · 08/04/2010 12:53

GOML I think it might be this one but am not sure as I have not had time to read it all again.

Can't find the thread, but if you google then there is quite a bit of information about Aspartame and its possible effects. Think it is even banned in some countries.

claig · 08/04/2010 12:56

fantastic news well done. cocolepew please spend a little time looking into it for your health. There is tons of stuff about it on youtube. I avoid all of the sweeteners. Real sugar is natural. Aspartame is in chewing gum, most "diet" drinks, fizzy diet drinks etc. Read all of the labels carefully. Type in "aspartame dangers" in google and see what you find.

claig · 08/04/2010 13:06

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 08/04/2010 13:44

they've changed the name now, haven't they?

Aspartame is now called AminoSweet and they're really trying to push it

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 08/04/2010 13:46

Twas a thread started by Solo IIRC

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 13:49

This is really interesting.

I have been having a long commute to work for over a year, I drink a lot of diet coke and sweetened coffee to keep myself awake.

I have been however very tired, grumpy and downright depressed (been clinically diagnosed antidepressants which are not helpng really 6 months later) and I have just put it down to a strssful job (albeit a job I love) and the long drive.

Boycotting this for a month is well worth a go I think.

WHAT will I do without diet coke though? Am addicted to the stuff.

claig · 08/04/2010 13:56

GetOrfMoiLand, look into it, you'll lose your addiction faster than the speed of light. Water is boring, but is very important for your health. Also look into anti-depressants. Eat a healthy diet for good balance.

PaintPod · 08/04/2010 14:04

All sweeteners are full of shite. A spoonful of good old sugar is a much healthier option.

Romanarama · 08/04/2010 14:10

GOML ime if you pack in the caffeine completely you feel more awake - after the hideous cold-turkey phase. Boringly enough eating fruit and veg, doing some exercise, and going to bed early (especially going to bed early) is a pretty good recipe for feeling better. I don't do those things btw [not smug]

maduggar · 08/04/2010 14:11

I am also addicted to diet coke - any alternatives?

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 14:13

Fruit and veg, exercise, water

No, seriously, I will certainly give it a go.

I am sat here looking at 2 x 500ml bottles of diet coke. It is a weird thing but I feel I cannot function without it.

claig · 08/04/2010 14:16

maduggar, I stopped diet coke years ago when I found out about it. I was addicted to real coke which is much better because it is real sugar. Then I looked into coke and was off it like a shot, never went back. Don't worry about alternatives, research it and you'll be sorted.

claig · 08/04/2010 14:18

GetOrfMoiLand, it's not all bad. Eat meat, animal fat, bacon, eggs, butter, red meat, it's all very good healthy stuff.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 14:20

Is probably better to go cold turkey isn't it.

I have tried tg wean myself off it before with fizzy water but it made me fart like a racehorse (TMI sorry).

I will try anything actually because I have been on very strong ADs now for 6 months and although superficially I have a good life (work, home etc) to be honest I have terrible moods and wake up in the middle of the night sometimes consumed with anger. 3 types of ADs and therapy as well and no difference.

claig · 08/04/2010 14:22

carbonated water is not good for you, always try and drink still water.

pagwatch · 08/04/2010 14:25

Getorf

If you can get off this stuff it would be good. Clearing out my diet made a huge difference to my mental health.

My DS2 is like a canary in that his reactions to these things are so much more acute. Artificial sweeteners make him bite his own arms .
Once I saw the difference to his mood after I pulled them I vowed none of my DCs would ever have them again.

MrFibble · 08/04/2010 14:30

Eeek! Why is carbonated water not good for you? I have a soda stream (I know, soooo 70s) and drink loads of it.

trellism · 08/04/2010 14:39

Well, I'm a miserable moody sod and never ever have artificial sweeteners because they taste revolting.
