Update on aibu to call the Vicar

OK, it's about 9am and I am really quite freaked out now. I was playing with girls in living room adjoining the kitchen (door open, tumble drier going) Realise tumble drier not noing, so go in to unload it.

Door's open. Clothes are all over the kitchen. Door has NEVER done this before, I checked water container not full so caused it to stop (would have light flashing and be sort of "ticking over" if so). But no, it's actually been turned off. Not by me. And 4yo can't reach, plus hasn't been int he kitchen. Thinking about it, we have been up since 6am and when I was in and out of the kitchen getting porridge/fruit/drinks etc and taking them through to the dining room I kept thinking, "I am SURE I turned that light on/off", but it was always on or off when I didn't expect it to be.

Actually I spoke to my next door neighbour (we live in adjoining, mainly 1860s cottages and she used to live in ours)about what happened earlier this week, and she said to me, that yes, whilst she felt a presence (benign as well) the only thing she was ever aware of was a door shutting very firmly at 0630 every morning, and this is in her cottage, not ours. She came across yesterday to say she had been much more aware of it recently as it seems to be happening more often.

Right am going to e-mail vicar now. Just thought I'd update and wibble.

ok

groundhogs · 21/03/2010 09:24

OMG, littlesilver, that certainly seems weird....

Seems like someone wants your attention alright... wonder why?

I really hope you can get some resolution to your problem!

lolapoppins · 21/03/2010 10:06

That's spooky.

We have a ghost who likes to turn our tumble drier on when we are out. Not sure if ts being hlepful or trying to burn the house down tbh.

LynetteScavo · 21/03/2010 10:09

Can a vicar do anything, though?

Don't you need a special ghost clearing person? What ever they are called?

Lulumaam · 21/03/2010 10:11

we have an on / off ghost, and we used someone from teh spirituliast church to move it on, although he has popped back from time to time

thumbwitch · 21/03/2010 10:12

exorcists are usually members of the Cloth lynette - a vicar qualifies

ooh thats a bit odd! i'd call the vicar just to put your mind at ease

junglist1 · 21/03/2010 10:42

I agree with telling the ghost off. They were once human, after all. If it was an evil ghost you'd feel it. Saying all that, I'd cack myself

Wineonafridaynight · 21/03/2010 10:56

How creepy. Hope you aren't too freaked out!

Would love to see the other thread - could someone link to it please?

thumbwitch · 21/03/2010 11:01

just as a matter of interest, is there a high stress level in your house at the mo? Although it does sound like you have a "presence" mucking around, I just remember that when I am extremely stressed "interesting" things happen with electrical equipment (although admittedly not quite as extreme as your experience)!

Rebeccaruby · 21/03/2010 18:53

I find appliances go wrong more when I am stressed too, but I don't think this would account for clothes being strewn around outside the machine. Maybe just ask the entity to stop. I know this sounds strange, but offer to buy a plant, either house or garden, and dedicate it to them. Worked for a friend.

BritFish · 21/03/2010 19:17

vicars dont have special powers.
or maybe thats me thinking that religion and death/afterlife have bugger all to do with one another, cynic here, but do believe in ghosts, just believe if theyre after you, its best for you to do the talking!

cheesypopfan · 21/03/2010 19:24

The vicar may be able to bless your house or refer you to what is called the 'deliverence team'. Either way, if it helps you and puts you at ease, why not?

brassband · 21/03/2010 21:13

I think the best thing to do is just speak to the 'whatever it is' and reassure it that you mean it no harm.
Are you new to the house or have you had some alterations done? I didn't used to believe in this stuff, but have some very sensible friends in an old house who've had this kind of trouble.
Also just before my DS1 hit puberty we had some weird stuff going on when he was in the house. But I'm not sure whether this is more energy coming from the child than a 'spirit'?

uglymugly · 21/03/2010 22:03

I'm mostly sceptical about these kinds of things and suggest that it would be a good idea to have your electrical wiring checked. Not every problem with wiring results in the consumer unit tripping. I'm not an expert at all, but one thought is if there had been a brief power surge that could have triggered the electronic gubbins in the tumble dryer to open the door, thus throwing the clothes out, and the dryer to stop.

On the other hand, I've heard of many cases of unexplained phenonema, some from people who I know are not imagining it and your post, LittleSilver, has the same sense of accuracy. Strange things do happen. Whether they have a scientific explanation or not doesn't matter when it's happening to you in your house.
