To think the "Oven Pride" advert is sexist and patronising

This is the advert for an oven cleaner where you put the dirty shelf in a special bag, squirt in some stuff, shake it about a bit then wash the shelf.

The strap line is "So easy that a man could do it"

They then have this dopey looking bloke cleaning the shelf while his simpering partner looks on indulgently.

I think it is an awful ad and if you imagined a product advertised the opposite way, I dunno say "a car that is so manoeuverable that a woman could park it" people would throw things at the screen.

Who do they think they are aiming this product at anyway? It will only alienate male viewers and I dread to think what motive a woman would have for buying it.

I find it fucking annoying (sorry for swearing but it does my head in)!

I find it patronising- they think if they giggle at us and slag men off we'll buy they crappy product

doesntplaywellwithothers · 19/03/2010 19:40

I can't believe you brought this up...I quite literally scream when that stupid ad come on!! I can't understand why the woman looks SO angry??? And I, too, hate the strap line.

So, nothing to ad really, just that I hate it with a passion!

GypsyMoth · 19/03/2010 19:41

I think the product is the worst thing about the advert!!!

Do we really need to resort to that to clean an oven???

juneybean · 19/03/2010 19:42

Oooooo I posted this the other day!! I shoulda put it in AIBU

It's so unbelievable!

It's the "heheheheheheheh" at the end that does it for me!

poshwellies · 19/03/2010 19:44

My dh always cleans the oven as I hate the chemical smell.I don't think I simper at him indulgently while he does it

It's deliberately annoying so that you remember it, like the shouty Cillit Bang adverts.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 19/03/2010 19:52

REALLY annoying. Patronising to men and, as dittany says, perpetuates the myth that women have to do things like cleaning the oven because men 'can't'. Of course they fucking can, anyone can.

nannynobnobs · 19/03/2010 19:54

Oh I complained about this to DD1 yesterday. It's so rude!! who on earth are they aiming this shitty ad at?

thomsc · 19/03/2010 20:57
JaneS · 19/03/2010 21:00

Oh well, if it's 'all just a bit of fun', that makes it ok then

This and the Sheila's Wheels ads. Grrr.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 19/03/2010 21:04

This is the worst advert I have seen in a long time, it's just offensive to everyone. Like they think "lets get the women onside by knocking the men"

GoldenSnitch · 19/03/2010 21:15

I was about to say the same as thomsc - it's already been investigated and deemed OK. I'd ban it just for the laugh at the end personally! Have you noticed that the woman is pregnant too? Because of course she has to have a good excuse for not cleaning the oven herself!

It does work wonders though. I hate cleaning ovens so don't so it as often as I should and that stuff shifts the muck really easily. It just wipes off!

squeaver · 19/03/2010 21:18

Oh it's just crap. Insulting to everyone. Not funny. Devoid of any creativity.

Do you think she is supposed to be pregnant GS. I thought she was just overweight and badly dressed.

GoldenSnitch · 19/03/2010 21:23

I'm pretty sure she's pregnant...

Definitely

Watch her tummy when she turns to pass him the bottle of cleaner

advert

I think she is pregnant. No need to look so angry though! Rubbish advert. No way am I buying that product again!!!

LittleSilver · 19/03/2010 21:28

It's patronising and sexist and demeans everyone. It's not even very original.

antoinettechigur · 19/03/2010 21:29

Either my post has disappeared or I posted how stupid I think this ad is somewhere else recently!

Anyway DP is the only one who cleans the oven in our house and neither of us are labouring under the illusion that he is stretching himself mentally to do so.

CrankyTwanky · 19/03/2010 21:37

My oven only ever gets cleaned when I'm pregnant and DH does it coz "I can't possibly use those chemicals"

Pure bilge, so it is. DH seemed quite about it when I told him about it, which is a worry.

TottWriter · 19/03/2010 21:49

I love the comments on YouTube - particularly the one from the person who works in advertising and thinks that quite apart from the sexism, it's just plain crap.

It really does look like someone was bored one afternoon and cooked it up for laughs. A real case of 'What were they thinking!', on several levels.

Maleeka · 19/03/2010 21:54

Clearly i need to get out more cos my first thought was "hmm i wonder if it actually works, cos i hate cleaning my oven".

Similarly the ad about that bird fancying a shag as the world was about to end, also didnt make me reach for my remote in anger.

I'll get my coat.....

beammeupscotty · 19/03/2010 23:32

Every other ad. shows a stupid half wit of a man unable to do simple things:-
the woman with pmt who twangs the OH out the window.
The man who walks out the house with an iron burn in his shirt.
the pizza hut lad who figured out the washing machine.
endless idiots who have to be 'relieved' of the cleaning duties by competant women.
I could go on and on - my H actually does! It infuriates him, and anything that annoys him is all GOOD imo!!!

Errrr..."so easy a man could do it" - don't think my DH actually could -or ever would . Personally I think the product's great - tried it last month and it really works with no scrubbing!
(now I'm running off to hide and watch the rest of Fri 13th before I get shot down)
