I've seen gluten free on bottles of water, may contain nuts on packets of peanuts and suitable for vegetarians on tins of peas! How stupid do manufacturers think we are!!!?
Is this just me?

Some flavoured waters contain barley...and as somebody who is seriously allergic to wheat & gluten it is really important to know. It can't really hurt just to put it there just in case.

lifeas3plus1 · 26/02/2010 18:13

I still like "May contain Milk" on cartons of milk.

LilyLovesSid · 26/02/2010 18:16

It always makes me laugh at work that we have to put a warning on packets of paracetamol that says 'Warning - contains paracetamol'.

I understand about the flavoured water thing (didn't realise about barley), but 'may contain nuts' on a packet of peanuts is a little silly!

Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 18:41

MrsMontague I'm talking about plain old boring water, nothing exciting, just water! If people are too stupid as to not know if they can have it or not, they shouldn't be out shopping on their own!

Sekhmet you didn't specify whether or not it was just plain water or not, that's the only reason I thought I'd mention it. It's not stupidity, especially when you have only just been diagnosed with an allergy...you can't be expected to know every single thing! Especially when it is in things you wouldn't expect such as flavoured water, baked beans etc...it's a good thing that they have labels, and I think it's a bit daft that it bothers you enough to post about it.

Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 18:54

Sorry I just thought it would have been obvious, guess I know why those labels are there now, can never be too sure hey! I've seen vegetarian labels on water too, gotta be careful of that beef infused water!

my absolute favourite is on the egg carton. Warning, contains egg.

bridewolf · 26/02/2010 19:12

the may contain on a packet of peanuts is there to point out that the peanuts may be cross contaminated with other nuts, like tree nuts.

this is important because you can be able to eat peanuts, but have a severe allergy to some tree nuts.

we need this labelling, these sorts of labels are LIFE SAVERS, for those with severe allergies.

my sons life depends on a label being truthful, clear, and reliable.

sadly even with good labeling laws, that is not always possible.

spitandpolish · 26/02/2010 19:22

My dd can eat peanuts but not treenuts. Sorry if it puts you out . If you don't have to label everything that is obvious then where do you draw the line? It is obvious to someone with a milk allergy that they will have to read the labels on ham, pate, tomato sauce etc but it may not be obvious to someone catering for a milk allergic person for the first time. When you see the allergy box and your allergen isn't there then you know you are ok rather than not taking the risk because they haven't bothered listing all the allergens because you should just know.

Sod it! I was talking about the really stupid ones, but nevermind!
