I spent all day cleaning the house (when I should have been studying)for MIL and SIL's visit only for them to phone and cancel at 6.30pm?

I'm not sure about this one...

should I be a bit pissed off or just shrug it off?

well you have a clean house! look on the bright side

I'd probably be annoyed in private, but attempt to affect a non-bothered attitude if asked. When were they supposed to arrive, and could they have given better notice? That's the part I would be annoyed about - if they'd sat around and could have said but didn't "manage" to.

Or did they have a legitimate last-minute reason? If it is the latter, I would do your best to shrug it off. These things do happen from time to time.

shrug it off, your house is clean, now you can study.

Have a very smug lie in tomorrow knowing you have a beautifully clean house

PS this is the first contact I've had from DP's family since this

so I am a little emotionally charged
