To Be Slightly Smug That I Live in Belfast

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 14:22

and therefore have had one day of not that much snow?

No panic buying here. No lack of grit (isn't grit just dirt and some salt? How hard could it be to get more?!?!). No school closures.

Just very very cold and very very sunny.

I know its a stupid thing to be smug about, but we are usually the ginger haired step children of the UK, so its nice to not be having a tough time right now.

Oh and we have juicy scandal with First Minister's Wife, MP Iris Robinson, and her now 21 (19 during the affair) year old lover...

Pikelit · 08/01/2010 14:30

That IS a juicy scandal! I particularly liked the awful, Biblical manner in which he claimed to have "forgiven" her transgressions. I was expecting the woman to have turn into a pillar of salt by now...

But no, as someone brought up in Belfast and England, please excuse me if I say that I'm actually happy right now, across the water from you, looking out at the snow-covered fields while cosily sat in my workroom. Oops! Work! Ah!

BikeRunSnowflake · 08/01/2010 14:33

Glad you are feeling smug. Until yesterday, we had had snow in my part of Yorkshire at some point everyday for 3 weeks. After a quite exiting white Christmas,it is getting boring now. We had a big dump on Tuesday. After attempting to get to work on Wed, I have not been brave enough to drive anywhere since.

Road salt is rock salt, often mixed with crushed gravel to make it go further. It is mined in Cheshire. The problem has been getting the wagons to the mines, especially from locations on the east side of the Pennines, as most of the Pennine passes have been closed.

maristella · 08/01/2010 14:42

can't buy salt anywhere at the moment!!

TakeLovingChances · 08/01/2010 14:45

Are you serious?

Take a drive up to Glengormley (where I live), there's plenty of snow lying here, not to mention sheets of ice on footpaths.

Surely it must be time for it all to melt and for life to get back to normal soon; this is getting quite boring, being freezing and stuck in the house.

skihorse · 08/01/2010 14:48

This is possibly the first time in my life I've ever heard someone boast about living in Belfast!

Pikelit · 08/01/2010 14:49

Mother says all is snowy in the wild wastes of Co.Fermanagh.

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 14:52

NOT in the part of Belfast I live (admittedly the top of the mountain) we have snowdrifts the lot

But I was wondering if we were going to have an Iris Robinson thread, oh I must say its the first tiome in forever I have been glued to Spotlight!

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 14:56

That's why I said Belfast and not Northern Ireland, Takelovingchances and pikelit. I know north and east of here there is lots of snow!

and skihorse!

But at least all of NI can enjoy the scandal!!!

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 14:57

I fell asleep before it came on Plumbummum but DH said it was very interesting!

And Mr I'm 21 looks about 15!!!

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 08/01/2010 14:58

Well I'm enjoying the snow so actually I feel sorry for you Mind you we don't have that much here.

petisa · 08/01/2010 15:02

Yabu, I?m visiting Belfast soon and I want dd to be able to play in the lovely snow! We don?t have any where we live. On second thoughts, it makes travelling a nightmare, so yanbu? Oh I don?t know whether I want snow or not, I love the idea of sledging and making snowmen, but the reality is being freezing cold and scared in the car?

Have you seen this thread about said juicy scandal?

PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 15:02

I missed the first 10 mins and was watching going what the hell age is he?
I must say it really shocked me he was soo young!!

MorrisZapp · 08/01/2010 15:04

I feel smug too, I live in Edinburgh. Obviously we have lots of snow but who cares, it's still Edinburgh

That affair woman is sickening - did you see her on telly saying that 'just as murderers can be redeemed, so can homosexuals be redeemed in the blood of christ'.

I didn't know people like that existed!! Far less left in charge of running a country. Scary.

NaccetyMac · 08/01/2010 15:05

I'm in NI, 30 miles south of Belfast, 1 millimetre of snow but ice and ice and cold and ice. I have never ever seen the rivers frozen before.

I'm a little jealous of the snow days, you can't drive out of my road (ice) but you can walk across the fields so no excuses.

Pikelit · 08/01/2010 15:07

Nobody should ever confuse the DUP with tolerance!

beckie222 · 08/01/2010 15:09

We always get slighty less dramatic weather here than in mainland uk, but this also applies in the summer when they get lovely warm temps and we don't.
Lots of ice where I am in co. tyrone which is making life a bit difficult, I haven't been out of the house in over 1 week.

Oh and there is a thread about the Robinson's was lurking on it last night, at least it gives us something else to gossip about.

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 15:09

That's for sure Pikelit!

I swear you can hear the gay community all over NI cheering.

OP posts:
PlumBumMum · 08/01/2010 15:09

Morriszapp she has a friend that can cure gays

pinkhousesarebest · 08/01/2010 15:20

What would it be about Belfast that it would make it unboastworthy? Wish I was there now instead of the frozen wilds of France.

Particularly with Mrs Robinson on the front pages.

TakeLovingChances · 08/01/2010 16:37

How'd we get from talking about snow and ice in Belfast to a conversation about Iris's affair?

Best to keep the two chats apart, I think.

petisa · 08/01/2010 16:40

Well, to be fair, Tee mentioned both in her OP.

noddyholder · 08/01/2010 16:41

You are right to be smug! I was brought up in Northern Ireland and Belfast is definitely the loveliest part

upafrozenhill · 08/01/2010 16:47

Well I love the snow and feel sorry that you haven't any. The kids have enjoyed their extra time of school. I have enjoyed going out walking for miles in the snow when I come home. Going out again this evening. All my work has been cancelled which is a bit sad but I'll make it up over the next couple of months so no real problem.

I'm happy!

By the way what is up with ginger haired step children

Tee2072 · 08/01/2010 16:50

Yes, I did mention both. I didn't realize there was a limit to how many topics I could have in one post. How odd I've been posting here for over a year and have never been told this supposed rule before. (end sarcasm font)

upafrozenhill Red Headed Left Handed Bastard Step Children is a way of saying 'not part of the family, outsiders' in the Southern United States. I just adapted it a bit.

BTW my son is ginger! I like ginger hair!
