To think DH is trying it on because I am ill?

I woke up yesterday with tonsillitis. He phoned me at work later declaring that he also had tonsilitis.

When we were in bed I said "only one of my tonsils is really sore, the other one is okay" He stated that is because you only have one tonsil. I almost pmsl at this, but had to stop because it was making my head hurt more .

Anyhoo, upon discussing what your tonsils actually are, he said that it is the dangly thing at the back of your throat (the uvula?).

So AIBU to think if he actually had this illness he would know what his tonsils were, and he just trying it on because I am ill and he is worried he will have to do all the xmas preps himself?

how hysterical!! you have two tonsils and one uvula, which is the dangly thing you can see.

he is trying it on

Lulumama · 24/12/2009 10:00

sorry, hope you are feeling better soon, i've only had tonsilitis once and it was horrible

itsmeolord · 24/12/2009 10:09

He is trying it on, have you actually got tonsilitus though or strep throat?
If it's full blown tonsilitus you'll have nasty yellow/white spots on the tonsil and need antibiotics.
If its strep throat it will just be very red and you can get stuff over the counter for it.

ShinyAndNew · 24/12/2009 10:14

I dunno, my tonsils feel really very sore and are very swollen. I feel either shivery or hot and very lethargic.

I have been getting through the days with copious amounts of pro plus and prescription strength Neurofen.

I haven't actually looked at them, but I can feel them with my tongue (my GP says this is very rare) and they do feel like they are coated with something.

Or maybe he does genuinely have a sore throat and is, like many people, not entirely certain about what or where the tonsils are? IME, women tend to be more knowledgeable about things like this because it is usually the women who have to deal with their children's ailments and therefore we are more inclined to find out where the various things are. Men are usually told by their doting mothers that a sore throat is tonsillitis, just as they are told a cold is the flu!

I have a dreadful throat the moment, ( not tonsillitis, they were removed about 350 years ago!)

Maybe he is worried about doing the Christmas prep, but maybe he genuinely does have a sore throat!

ShinyAndNew · 24/12/2009 10:22

Hmm, maybe RBSWife. But I am inclined not believe him, when he is ill, unless he displays obvious symptoms. He has a history of being more ill than me and of having hypochondria. I am surprised it is tonsilitus he has and not cancer of the throat/a flesh eating disease/something else deadly.

If either of you had tonsillitis you would feel worse than you do when you get (proper not man) flu. I have had it once and have never felt so ill in my life. Could barely get up for long enough to get to the docs and then it was back to bed with antibiotics and plenty of fluids.

As itsmeolord says, the spots are the key symptom and they are hard to miss - when I opened my mouth the dr looked in for about one second (she thought I just had bad strep throat up to this point) and said 'Oh my God, that really is tonsillitis'

CirrhosisByTheSea · 24/12/2009 10:32

agree with Sleeping - I don't think either of you have tonsillitis! You would be bed bound and begging the Dr for antibiotics if you did have it - take it from me, I had this numerous times some years ago and no amount of pro plus would have got me through any day with it!

itsmeolord · 24/12/2009 11:13

Stop taking the pro-plus for fucks sake! It will make you feel worse. Caffeine is a bad idea when you have a temperature.

Neurofen and Paracetomol staggered to keep the temperature down and relieve the aches/soreness.

(ie neurofen at 12pm then paracetomol at 2pm, stagger so you take each at 4 hr intervals.)

Drink plenty of fluids and avoid sugary drinks.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 24/12/2009 11:20

Having been a veteran of tonsillitis I can say that sometimes when I got it I was confined to bed and sometimes I could just about function. Always high temp.

strep throat is a particular bacterial infection, can make you feel very fluey and unwell. Usually get antibiotics for it.

Tonsillitis can be viral or bacterial in origin. Your dh may have the same bug, just that it hasn't infected his tonsils.

As I was told when I had my tonsils out, it won't stop me getting sore throats!

Hope you feel better. I reckon its worth seeing a gp cos otherwise you'll be stuck trying to get an ou of hours appt if yo get worse. If it is bacterial antibiotics will help within a day or two.

kinnies · 24/12/2009 14:03

Yep I can also say that when I had tonsillitis (about 1000000000000 times) I was mostly ok and only beb-bound a few times.

Look down his throat with a tourch. Tis easy enough to spot.

ShinyAndNew · 24/12/2009 14:25

I have had tonsilitis a fair few times. Once really bad. I couldn't get out of bed for days. The other times, not so bad. I could function if I needed to, but I'd prefer to be in bed, much like now.

The doc won't take my tonsils out because they are 'shrivelled' apparently. How/why this has happened I don't know. Perhaps that is why I don't get it so bad now?

Pin him down and look. I want to know!!

disclamer; I'm ill in bed and cant amuse myself so am more intrested in the outcome than is normal

bargainhuntingbetty · 24/12/2009 14:35

RBS Wife, you can still have tonsilitis even with no tonsils. My DH gets it regularly and the gp says it is because years ago they didnt remove the roots and it is them which become infected. Hope you all feel better for santa coming. xx
