To think this GP wasn't exactly being helpful?

Went to the GP today as we're ttc no.2 and my period is two weeks late. Have done millions of tests, all negative. She did another one there, also negative. She said my period was probably just late, that for it to be two weeks late is 'normal', that I'm stressed (I'm not) and that as according to my last period I'd be six weeks, a negative result means I am most definitely not up the duff. She eventually decided I should have a blood test.

To top it all off, my mother asked me if I was pregnant: she was looking at my stomach so clearly I'm fat as well as not expecting!

I don't know what you are unhappy about.

SHe has tested you and given you a blood test.

What did you want?

edam · 02/12/2009 20:02

Not sure what you expected the GP to do? Or what else she could have done?

manchestermummy · 02/12/2009 20:02

She made me feel like a bit of an idiot for having tested so many times!

TTC is probably your world at the moment.

She is a GP who knows that there are many, many reasons why a period can be two weeks late and probably doesn't understand why someone would retake so many tests in such a short period of time.

You're not an idiot to have tested so many times (well, if you are, so is half of MN, myself included) but TBH I don't think there's much else she could do and you may have been wiser to wait until you'd skipped a second period before pushing for more invasive tests etc...

edam · 02/12/2009 20:07

Well, if it's any comfort, that was dh's reaction when I got pregnant with ds. Although tbh I did buy about half a dozen tests because I just couldn't believe it.

Sorry but your GP is right btw, those early tests just make money for the manufacturers. Mother nature is a bitch and the majority of actual conceptions fail... far better to wait until you've missed a period and test then.

No one can make you feel like an idiot - that comes from you - late periods can be normal but you could have only just ovulated so could be pg just earlier than 6 weeks - did normal preg tests work for you last time? Some women apparently produce a slightly different type of preg hormone that urine tests don't react to - so she did the right thing doing a blood test

Know this is frustrating - the month before I fell with DC3 I was really late and couldn't understand why. Preg tests were nagative because I wasn't pregnant. Try to relax and time will tell one way or the other.

How long have you been trying ? I know that months and months and years and years of ttc can send even the most sane of us loopy I'm not sure what you would have wanted her to do tbh - when do you get the blood tests results ?

macdoodle · 02/12/2009 21:33

What else did you expect her to do?? what would have been more helpful exactly
