I got married five weeks ago, and wanted some copies of the marriage certificate so I don't have to send the original to the bank/passport office (to lose)

According to the council website, a copy certificate costs £3.50 from the registrar. But we got married in church, so the records are still there, so we have to ask the church. They are charging £35 each! I know I have to pay it as I would be devastated to lose the original, but 10 times the cost!

Please tell me my anger is justified...

You got married in church but surely it's also a civil contract, registered with the registrar - so you should be able to get a copy from there?

I could be completely wrong though. But I don't think I am.

Crumbs, that is a bit of a mark up isn't it?

I wonder what their production costs are for them to justify charging so much?

YANBU, that is very expensive for a bit of paper.

can you order one from here?

For a passport you have to send in original.

For bank isn´t it enough just to take in & show?

I know we never furnished all & sundry with copies of our marriage lines.

You can get the PO Counter to validate that they've seen your original certificate for a small fee. And it's a civil document - there will be a civil record and you can get a certified copy through the civil authority. The church is probably charging that much because it's a way of making money.

Last night I ordered another marriage certificate from the council where I got married ... in a church. You are still registered with the Registrars in the council you got married in so you you can still get you copy via the council website

Mine has just coet £7.50, and DS's birth certificate, £3.50 is a bargain

That's what I said at the top of the thread oldraver (grrr)
