making somebody crash.....

Just done the school run. It's a two way road with one of the sides being blocked by parked cars and buses at school run time, so effectively one carriageway. Was my right of way, but I stopped to let one car down that had already started past the blocking cars.

This was followed by about ten other cars, only one of which acknowledged the fact that I had had to wait.

So when the eleventh started coming down the road, I though sod it and started to drive too. So they pulled over (in the very tight space) and knocked somebodies wing mirror off.

Was I BU to start driving even though my right of way.

(Should add this was all done at about 5mph so no danger to passing DCs)

OP posts:
BiteOfFun · 06/10/2009 16:16

I flash oncoming cars all the time to say thankyou, but apparently you shouldn't really...

stuffitllllama · 06/10/2009 16:16

and again yanbu

what is everyone on about?

he crashed the car not you, he's a twat driver, who said that

lal123 · 06/10/2009 16:16

YABU - you're lucky it was just a wing mirror they hit and not a child between cars. Once you've decided to wait and lost your right of way then tough.

stuffitllllama · 06/10/2009 16:17

bruxeur

someone who crashes drives like a twat

stuffitllllama · 06/10/2009 16:18

in fact, you are obviously terminally nice, which is why you have adopted the guilt of "it was my fault he crashed"

amtooyoungforthis · 06/10/2009 16:21

I think it's unreasonable to go into a school road, why not park a few streets away so you miss the bottleneck??

We have a school that is on a road like this, parents are asked repeatedly, if they absolutely have to drive into it, then treat it as a one way street. And of course, every night it is mayhem. Just park a little bit away and these problems wouldn't happen

blueshoes · 06/10/2009 16:24

Absolutely jackbau. There is no obligation for zip merging. As there is no obligation for the OP to let anyone through. But if she does, she does not have to do anything other than the minimum she decides.

Vinomum · 06/10/2009 16:25

To those who have called you a twat (v unnecessary IMO) - you had right of way (ie I assume the parked cars causing the blockage were on the other side of the road) - so therefore were not obliged to stop at all. The fact that you did shows you are a considerate and sensible driver. And also not a person to have the piss taken by a load of lazy and impatient drivers. Feel sorry for wingmirror man as he seems to be the innocent victim in this tale but I would have done exactly the same as you (and probably mouthed a few expletives at the other, less considerate, road users as they passed me without saying thank you .

blueshoes · 06/10/2009 16:26

Agree with stuffit.

Stonecrows, you did not make someone crash. He made himself knock out someone's wing mirror by pulling into a tight space and not reversing.

Tough.

GypsyMoth · 06/10/2009 16:30

i agree...op you aren't responsible,the other driver is
YANBU

jazzandh · 06/10/2009 16:34

Tough on the driver taking the p*ss and the one whose wing mirror got knocked off too - for parking in a crap place!

The lack of any manners when driving causes me to lose mine too! You start off being nice and where does it get you?!

EdgarAllenPoo · 06/10/2009 16:35

yanbu - if no-onw lets you out, then you have to push. there was a space, and probably if they'd been less of a twat, they'd have got into it without wrecking the scenery.

Tiredmumno1 · 06/10/2009 16:37

YANBU totally annoying, a quick thanks doesnt cost anthing, and obviusly you are not going to sit there all day letting everyone through, you did the right thing

Tiredmumno1 · 06/10/2009 16:40

lol thats what i was thinking jazz

bumpsoon · 06/10/2009 18:05

Have to say you have my full sympathy on this one ,our village is used as a rat run and if you stop to let one person through ,every ignorant bastard behind pushes through too. I didnt realise though that the highway code states that if you are a considerate motorist and allow a vehicle through ,that this then means you lose your right of way indefinately ? It is even more galling when those people pushing through dont bother to acknowledge what you have done ,and im ashamed to say 90% of the time the ones who dont are women

blueshoes · 06/10/2009 19:11

bumpsoon, I am afraid I have to concur on your last sentence, in particular. Women drivers are least likely to give way IMO. Either they don't or refuse to notice the little courtesies that can be extended on the road.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/10/2009 19:20

I think you were unreasonable. If, as you suggest, the last car was able to reverse, then there would have been presumably nothing behind it and you could have gone then. I think someone who thinks "sod it" is possible not making sensible decisions while driving.

ChilloHippi · 06/10/2009 19:23

When I read your title I though that YABU (I pictures a big crash), but having read your post,YANBU. It does annoy me when people don't acknowledge that you have waited for them, and I get angered by people taking the mickey when it is my right of way. YANBU. I do feel sorry for the person who lost a wing mirror though.

Glob · 06/10/2009 19:26

YANBU. It was your right of way. He should have checked you were letting him go before making his merry way down hence his own fault for hitting the wing mirror.

FABIsInTraining · 06/10/2009 19:27

Of course yabu, especially as it was the parked car which got damaged.

tinkerbellesmuse · 06/10/2009 19:36

Trouble is the person who crashed never even got the opportunity to be rude and thank the OP appropriately as OP was to busy trying to force them off the road....
