to hope that Andy Murray does not make it to the Wimbledon final...

I don't know why but I find there is something about him which is arrogant.

Also, I find it so bizarre the way the media always plays up how good he really is. At the end of the Ferrer match yesterday the Brit commentator made out Andy was some kind of demi-God for beating Ferrer. To me it is a match he should have won easily anyway.

Give me Nadal / Federer anyday!

YABU and unpatriotic.

I was talking to DH about it the other day and TBH I think he is quite shy and doesnt like the spotlight. He seems a little uneasy in press conferences and doesnt make eye contact.

If you don't like someone, then it is quite natural that you wouldn't want them to make it to the Wimbledon final.

I used to feel a bit like you about Tim Henman, because he was so erratic, but I think Andy is just another class.

I think he is a naturally dour person and I struggle to warm to him. That said, I was cheering him on yesterday, I would love to see anyone British in the final, we've had little to celebrate for so long.......

Plus DD2 thinks our mate looks like him, which amuses me.

FTR I don't think he is, i think he gets a serious amount of bad press because he is not Tim Henman smarmy.

I know lots of sports journalists that have met him and say that he just doesn't come across well on TV - he is naturally shy and nervy in front of the camera.

They all say that off camera he is a laugh, good, self deprecating sense of humour and a nice guy.

Don't you think that for anyone to become a top sportsmen they have to be focussed and disciplined, they have to believe they can be the best, they have to work day in and day out to be better and better and better?

This is what you think is arrogance. It's not, it's commitment.

I hate the whole 'oh I don't like him' schtick. He's a tennis player fgs. He needs to be good at tennis, he doesn't need to be your best friend and he shouldn't need to pretend to be modest to please you either.

I don't suppose there can be a more 'arrogant' man on the planet than Federer. He just disguises it well.

I think this is a weird by-product of sleb culture. Everyone is so used to saying 'oh I don't like her' about people whose only talent is for being themselves.

They forget that when you're looking at people who actually have a talent that the involvement should be different.

I don't have any strong views either way as to him winning - may the best man win and all that - but I do think it's a shame we expect people to perform as "personalities" rather than as athletes.

Can you imagine the inane questions that poor man probably has to put up with every day? How do you feel about winning? How do you feel about losing? How would you feel if you won Wimbledon? Are you going to win Wimbledon?

I'm a grumpy cow at the best of times but I think I'd lose the will to live having to perform in that way.

Britain doesn't have a lot of top-class sportsmen - the fact Andy's number three in the world is something to be proud of! Who cares if he doesn't come across as humble and people-pleasing? I want him to be good at tennis, not Mr Personality.
Actually, I quite LIKE the fact he's a dour, miserable so-and-so. TV-Personality-Cheesiness is hateful.

I don't think he's in a different class from Henman. I think the difference is that in Henman's day there were an awful lot more good players than there are now. So although Murray is good he doesn't have as much competition as Henman did.

That being said, I think it's about time that a Brit made it to the final, so if he does then fair play.

I really like Andy Murray. I like the fact he struggles a bit in front of the camera...he is human, he is a damned good tennis player and he has worked very hard to get to where he is. He comes across as a dour Scot...so what?

I never warmed to Tim Henman at all. I just didn't like the man. So no, you are not being unreasonable, it is entirely up to you who you support.

I think he comes across as a bit shy and has had a bad press for some things he said when he was younger - I mean, bloody hell, I dread to think of the crap I came out with when I was younger but at least it wasn't captured on tape and endlessly replayed.

I want him to win - its great to have sporting success. He's worked really hard to be as good as he is, you would have to be massively dedicated as well as talented to get to the top in tennis.

I, however, have the greatest respect for someone who almost got shot dead with the rest of his schoolmates (anyone remember Dunblane) and goes on to achieve all he has, at just 22.
