To think an experienced teaching assistant would know better than to upset and wind up a group of yr 6 children the week before SATS.

am very cross
DD is tetchy at the best of times.
she is already wound up about SATS despite my nonchalent efforts to play them down and relax her a bit.
Comes home just now furious, crying, angry, etc etc. turns out the class spent a while decorating name cards in readiness for monday.
DDs group go to this TA for maths. they come back and the TA announces she has done their name cards already and they won't be using the ones they have made.
blithering stupid cow then puts her maths groups lovingly made cards in the bin. DD has announced she won't be doing any maths papers and will sit doing nothing. I don't put it past her to do this.
If it wasn't too late on friday I would be having words. I won't be dropping off on monday as I will be at work.
DD is going to be a nightmare all weekend anyway with SATs looming and this is making her a thousand times worse.

sounds like a storm in a tea cup - she made some cards, ta made some cards. Daft TA then put them in the bin. Maybe she didn't know that they were important to the children.

It certainly doesn't excuse your dd carrying over this resentment til Monday - does she normally hang on to a grudge for that long?

You have done exactly the right thing by playing them down - my dd is totally unfazed by hers starting next week.

DD will carry on the grudge because she has aspergers.
what was the point of the whole class making their own name cards if they weren't going to mean anything?

Ah, makes sense now.

Were they out of the room when the ta did them - maybe there was a miscommunication

ellingwoman · 08/05/2009 18:07

I think I'd get confirmation this actually happened. Most teachers/tas know not to 'file' work like this until after home time

loobeylou · 08/05/2009 18:08

TA should have binned the ones he/she made

ProstetnicVogonJeltz · 08/05/2009 18:09

wouldn't mind at all if she had waited until they were out of the room but she did it in front of them. I don't think there is a misunderstanding otherwise DD wouldn't be so bloody upset.

ould it be that there is a rule that they can't take any paper they have written on into the exam and that technically the hand-written name cards contravene this ?

RustyBear · 08/05/2009 18:39

The only valid reason I can see for this is if they had decorated their cards with maths sums - if they'd put times tables facts on them for example, then they wouldn't be allowed to have them in the room. But even then, the TA should have said, sorry you can't use them but we'll save them for you to have on your desk/put on the wall after SATs, not binned them in front of the children.

The year 6s at our school are more wound up about the fact that the Government announced that next years' Year 6 won't have to do a science test just days before they do theirs - they spent their literacy lesson writing letters of complaint to Ed Balls, which the literacy co-ordinator sent off to him this afternoon.

I think that's very insensitive. They could have taken them home or saved them. However it has happened now. Perhaps your DD could make another better one for her bedroom door or something?

piscesmoon · 08/05/2009 19:04

I may be missing something but why do they even need a name card? Surely everyone knows who they are and they will sit in alphabetical order anyway?

pointydog · 08/05/2009 19:19

There's probably more to it. I'd tell your dd it doesn't matter a jot
