How is it possible to be THIS behind with the times??

I was talking to my mum earlier about possibly giving up my council house. My mum said "Be careful, because if the new place doesn't work out ... you'll end up homeless (fair enough, this is true ... but she then went on to say ... ) you might end up in an unmarried mothers home".

WTF?? I just said "they don't have stuff like that anymore!!" so she said "they do!! I know because our Marie got put in one!" That was 30 years ago!!!!!!!

How is it possible to be SO behind with the times??

Sounds like something my mum would say too!

PuppyMonkey · 28/04/2009 14:41

Think I might need to go in one then.

monkeypinkmonkey · 28/04/2009 14:42

me too!

FAQinglovely · 28/04/2009 14:43

ooo I could do with one of those too - just think you could set up a rota for babysitting and go out on the lash more often

my parents told me when i had my council flat that i wouldn't be able to decorate it? and/or get a bank account while i lived in it and i ought to use their address.
(my mother was raised in a council house by the way)

I despair at anyone who thinks that a reasonable way to back up a statement is to say 'it's true, it happened to X 30 years ago'.

I used to live in Camden Rd N London. Every other house used to be a mother and baby home. There was one specially set up to deal with those women who had been consorting with black men

I found this out because I was going through a collection of vintage annual reports at an organisation I used to work at. My dear boss was mortified as I am married to a black man and she thought I would give in my notice there and then!

On a slightly different topic - there seems to be an enduring myth that there are thousands of childrens' homes up and down the country filled to the brim with babies waiting to be adopted.

Can't believe that chegirl! Am so glad times have changed!!
For the record, I'm an unmarried mother. No way would I want my P to have half my future mansion, and to have to pay him maintenance forever!

Shoshe · 28/04/2009 20:47

I was a unmarried mother 30 years ago, and it was unheard of then! (At least where I lived in Rural Dorset)

Nighbynight · 28/04/2009 21:28

30 years ago probably seems just like yesterday to your mother.

Shoshe · 28/04/2009 22:26

Nighbynight It was yesterday
