to be annoyed with the PIL?

DS is 5 and still sucks his thumb.

It doesn't bother me,he only does it when he is tired or concentrating hard on something.

I think he will probably grow out of it eventually.

Evidently,though,it bothers the PIL because when he was last round there he came home upset because

1. Mil had kept putting MUSTARD on his thumb to try and stop him sucking it 2).fil KEPT SAYING TO STOP BEING A BIG BABY.

I am fuming tbh,because ds has been through hell of a lot in the past 2 years (Sick dad and disabled sis) and has behaved in a really caring and mature way throughout.If sucking his thumb helps him then wtf has it got to do with them????

I also have some issues because they dote on dd and sometimes ignore ds a bit.(DD has sn).

Sounds like the PIL's were being rather forceful and a bit horrible to a poor wee 5 yr old

As you say given what he's been through and how well he's coped (and how mature he's been which kinda shits on the "big baby" argument) I don't think a wee bit of thumb sucking merits such tactics

And mustard? Boke...that's awful

YANBU but don't assume he'll grow out of it - I still suck my thumb now and I'm 30

My parents tried a lot of things to try and stop me when I was younger but mustard seems OTT

As an ex thumb sucker I thin YABa wee bit U. I went through years of hellish orthodontic treatment because I was athumb sucker (I stopped when I was about 14). I wish my Mum had made more of an effort to make me stop!

Whatever the rights or wrongs of thumb sucking telling a 5 year old he is A BIG BABY is unkind and unnecessary. Poor little boy. I imagine your MIL was forcefully holding his hand to put the mustard on this thumb as well, can't imagine he volunteered it. I would be livid at this.
