to be annoyed at my MIL?

Today dd aged 2.10 was eating a pack of Organix carrot sticks at MIL's house and MIL(who smokes) said 'ooh are you smoking a cigarette?' and encouraged dd to 'smoke' the carrot stick.

I put a stop to it, straight away of course, but it's still annoying me!

I don't think a 2 year old should even know the word 'cigarette' and I was furious, especially when dd began calling candles 'cigarettes'.

Dh smokes and I hate it, especially knowing all the research about smokers being more likely to have children who become smokers.

I don't want dd modelling this kind of behaviour. What possessed my MIL?

I understand how angry you are are- I would be too, but I am sure your MIL didn't mean to upset you.

LucyTownsend · 18/01/2009 19:38

Grrr... am so mad on your behalf too - what a stupid thing to tell a 2 year old. No child should be educated like that about cigarettes. Just because she smokes doesnt mean that she should push that choice on your children!
YANBU!

But you are not being unreasonable!

ScottishMummy · 18/01/2009 19:40

yep bit of an aberration from MIL,but is she ok otherwise but not likely to have dd reaching for the Marlboro cigarette as result

noonki · 18/01/2009 19:40

mind we used to buy those ciggie sweets, never did me any harm. err except for the 20 years of fags.

tbh I think your DH smoking is more of an issue dsin terms of liklihood of her smoking.

pigletpants · 18/01/2009 19:43

I can't get dh to stop, but he only smokes out of view of dd and outside. I wish I could stop him. I am fervently anti-smoking and hope that I will be an influence too.

I think MIL spoke before she engaged her brain! A silly mistake I think.... best to overlook and move on, unless she makes the same error twice

ScottishMummy · 18/01/2009 20:30

fwiw,my parents V Heavy smokers 60+ day.i have never smoked

WinkyWinkola · 18/01/2009 20:32

I wouldn't go mad. I'd just tell MIL not to be so silly and tell DD that only silly people smoke.

I still miss fags even though they're rank.

LucyEllensmummy · 18/01/2009 20:37

I agree with noonki, i would be more worried about your DH smoking than anything else. But I would have been livid with MIL. FWIW both my parents smoked heavily and i am so against smoking and have NEVER smoked, even though most of my friends at school did. I hated it, still do!

Katiestar · 18/01/2009 22:26

YABU Sorry but your DH smoking (even if not around your DD) is much much more likely to influence her ,than some silly nonsense with carrot sticks.
