Freecycle Again!

MegaPhone · 15/01/2009 00:41

Just seen these two messages on my freecycle...

"Wanted - A big TV. I'm finding it difficult to afford things at the moment so if anyone has one, please email me. Thanks"

Then from the same poster...

"Wanted - A big TV stand. I may be getting a big TV soon and will need a stand to put it on, if anyone has one, please email me"

AIBU to find this a bit cheeky/odd?

LOLOL
'Also, can people please stop asking for the moon on a stick as it's pissing people off.'

EachPeachPearMum · 18/01/2009 00:01

I wish ours allowed 'borrowing' -eg- borrowing a drill for an afternoon, but not needing to keep it, or a really long set of ladders to clear out guttering- surely that would make a lot of sense, as some items really only get used once or twice, and it would be much better to have a little pool that many people could use? Certainly cut down on consumerism and waste!

lisad123 · 18/01/2009 00:04

we had wii fit and games! ds stuff, x box, flat screen tv, loads of arses. I asked for a double buggy for a family i was working with and got told off!

There's someone on my freecycle group asking for a rubber chicken!

scrooged · 18/01/2009 00:16

Oh, and a conservatory!

MrsSnape · 18/01/2009 01:37

Moon on a stick what IS that??

scrooged · 18/01/2009 01:38

I think it's asking too much. Shame really, it would look nice in my back garden. I'm always tempted to ask for a sugar daddy or a new life. I don't think I'd get very far though.

solo · 18/01/2009 01:54

I've seen several conservatories offered on FC.
I don't think I'd like swaps, but I'm not sure why
I do like giving and receiving though
Officially, dishwashers use far less energy/water than hand washing up. God news eh?!

nappyaddict · 18/01/2009 02:05

We've had cars, laptops, playstation 1 and 2, xbox, nintendo ds', tvs, fridges, dishwashers, freezers, ovens, hobs, washing machines, tumble driers offered.

Makes me laugh when people ask for really new stuff like nintendo ds lites, wiis, psps, xbox 360s etc though.

purpleflower · 18/01/2009 02:26

I asked for a double buggy when my car broke down. I did get offered one which has been a great help. Was it wrong of me to ask

nappyaddict · 18/01/2009 02:27

No definitely not. You don't ask you don't get imo.

NumberFour · 18/01/2009 09:50

i advertised some stuff to give away on Netmums. funnily, two of the people that responded were collecting things for a pregnant friend or a pregnant sister. perhaps i should check ebay.......

DH had warned me.

Someone on ours asked for a phil and teds 'in clean condition, must have second seat and any additional accessories desired'

Uh... sure.

cmotdibbler · 18/01/2009 10:37

We do Swaps on the Freecycle Cafe list, which works really well - I lent a chair to a Freecycler for her husband to use after his knee operation.

My neighbour offered us their conservatory when they were having an extension done instead, so it's not that unreasonable

JollyPirate · 18/01/2009 10:39

I gave up on Freecycle because of the stuff being asked for - not in the spirit of the thing at all.

I ofered DS's cot bed with coolmax mattress when he'd outgrown it and a lady who needed a bigger cot (but whose little one wasn't quite ready for a bed) took it and then Freecycled it when she no longer needed it. I then asked for a lawnmower when ours broke (and we couldn't afford to replace it) and were offered 4 in 24 hours - none were in the first flush of youth but all worked and we just accepted the first offer - very grateful we were too.

bubblerock · 18/01/2009 11:30

I offered a free holiday on ours, I couldn't go as it was for students - the board guide removed the listing as it wouldn't have filled the local landfill site?!?!? It was still bloody free!!! (4 people accommodation & tickets to gigs inc The Hoosiers in Majorca - they would just have to buy some cheap flights as they weren't included) Luckily someone spotted the post before it was removed and they were very chuffed

Somebody asked for money on my list!
One of the other mods (I'm one) rejected it, and then issued a noyice to say you cannot ask or offer money on freecycle.

scrooged · 18/01/2009 12:40

What a nerve!

solo · 18/01/2009 13:37

I am waiting for an ironing board to be collected this afternoon. My friend would've tipped it otherwise and there's nothing wrong with it.

I think if you are going to go out and buy something, then why not ask on FC. If someone is getting rid of just such an item, then it could work out really well surely? I've seen lots of ads asking for things that I've happened to have and not using it or just hanging on to it for the sake of it or sentiment, so it's prompted me to sort it out and pass it on. I'm still thinking about two Moses baskets though...

I gave away all my baby stuff via FC only to discover 10 days later that I was pg . I waited until I was halfway there and asked for things on FC via wanted ads.
I wouldn't ask for PS2's or Wii's though.

waspriceyp · 18/01/2009 14:30

I am actually PMSL at the Mod loosing it link! Too funny "stop asking for the moon on a stick"!!!!
It's a well used expression in this house!

greenbeanie · 18/01/2009 17:22

I offered a dining table on freecycle recently. One reply said "when can I pick it up, just send me your address and are there any chairs with it!!" Needless to say they did not get the item. I cannot believe how rude some people are....

BouncingTurtle · 18/01/2009 17:28

greenbeanie -- yes that pisses me off too.
I offered a full set of Buffy the Vampire video box sets, and I had one person email me "call me on xxxxx xxxxxxx I can pick up this afternoon". What really pissed me off was that I had said on my post that if there was more than one reply I would make a decision 3 days from when he had sent the email!
