I haven't thought much about which day Christmas is on. Too busy worrying about remembering everything I need to do this week

"Next Thursday" does not automatically equate with a particular day. If you had said "Christmas Day" then he undoubtedly would not have said, "what's happening then?" This is one of those "I'm going to catch my DH out and then moan when he falls into the trap" situations.
