To just quickly and apologetically ask - Why aren't we drinking Fruit Shoots??

Hi Ds (Soon to be 6) has a birthday party soon and for all of his parties (Except his 1st) I have always bought Fruit Shoots (or Asda equivilents - any better???) I must say it's been for convenience really - minimal spillage etc.

Anyhoo - I did mention to him that this year we weren't having them and having squash instead - there was a bit of a protest so thought ok then Fruit Shoots it is then.... Anyway looking at them in Morrisons thinking hmm Fruit Shoots Fruit Shoots working out the cost for 30 odd children ..... 30 odd children drinking them .....30 odd children drinking Fruit Shoots....... An absolute Mumsnetting nightmare but........ Why exactly are they the very work of the devil? Why exactly are us Mumsnetters so against them??? I stared and stared and then decided I just can't do it. So you've won!!! But could you just share with me the reason why!!

Excuse all the "......" that's me musing!!

because i'm drinking fake baileys atm.

TheCrackFox · 10/12/2008 23:06

I think, so long as you have Greggs sausage rolls with the fruit shoots they cancel each other out.

moondog · 10/12/2008 23:07

They're shit

If you want to give them squash stuff, why not make it yourself for a 10th of the price

All those bottles are grotesquely wasteful.

Those three do you?

BananaFruitBat · 10/12/2008 23:07

[shrug] DS drinks them.

hf128219 · 10/12/2008 23:07

Because it's meant to be a symbol of being common and a lot of MN's are snobs

zazen · 10/12/2008 23:08

I don't know why I'm afraid, but if you are serving them you have to have greggs sausage rolls as well, whatever they are, just to go the whole hog, so to speak.

Could it be cos they have sugar and E numbers? in them? I thought that was the point of parties? And then they all go home to their own homes!!

I just serve water TBH at DD's parties - but lots of cake!

KatyMac · 10/12/2008 23:09

"Water, Fruit Juices from Concentrate (Blackcurrant 6%, Apple 4%), Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Citric Acid, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Dimethyl Dicarbonate), Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K), Natural Flavouring, Natural Colour (Anthocyanins), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid)"

Do you even know what half those 'ingredients' are

mind you I'm not sure 'ingredients' is the right word...chemicals maybe better

zazen · 10/12/2008 23:09

X posts crackfox! LOL

Ronaldinhio · 10/12/2008 23:09

yabu and grotesque...fruit shoots...ugghhhhh

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 10/12/2008 23:15

Aspartame is evil stuff.

MsPontipine · 10/12/2008 23:16

Urghhh! They did have those Tip Top(??) types - rememember them - however cheap they were I did refuse to get them - they really do taste like nail varnish remover!

I went for 3 bottles of Robinsons squash. Could only get the lemon in NAS but the other 2 aren't - will have them in paper cups and expect all the littlies to be extra careful and not to spill

Overgeard a mother of 5 children in the playground the other day saying they were on offer at asda so she went in and got 30 cases as her children have them in their packed lunch boxes.

Apart from what others have mentioned they are expensive and diluted orange juice would be better.

OHOLYNIGHT · 10/12/2008 23:20

Watch the no added sugar squashes as they usually have aspartame in them.

The high juice variety of squash is usually ok.

pregapuss · 10/12/2008 23:21

What Katymc and ledogdy said

MsPontipine · 10/12/2008 23:23

We do have high juice at home

A little shit never hurt any child, mine sometimes have fizzy .
Although the environmental waste is shocking. Paper cups and squash do?

skrimbo · 10/12/2008 23:25

Why aren't we drinking fruit shoots?

50% do, but of that 50% - 75% are too scared to admit it.

50% don't because they are too far up there own arses to click the bottles open.

everything in moderation

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 10/12/2008 23:35

You know what I actually feel quite strongly about this. I let my kids have sweets etc. Sugar in moderation I can deal with , you can clean their teeth and the body can digest sugar. Aspartame can not be digested it is banned in some countries for being carcinogenic. There's no way I'd give it to my kids. That's why if they are offeed lemonade or diet lemonade i'd always opt for full sugared vaieties. I know alot of parents are fooled by the so called healthy sugar free varieties but sugar free usually means aspartame laden at this is very concerning.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 10/12/2008 23:35

*and not at!

TLESinChristmasStockings · 10/12/2008 23:36

ds1 and ds2 drink them when we are out in the car....but ds2's is watered down....other than milk and hot lolate (chocolate just how he says it) its all i can get him to drink.

goodasgoldfrankincenceandmyrhh · 10/12/2008 23:41

I would rather my children have sugar than artificial sweeteners.

TLESinChristmasStockings · 10/12/2008 23:44

but then on the other hand I am strict with sweets as a general rule,,,,although i have allowed ds2 (14m) 2 bars of milkybar and a packet of quavers today after him being off his food for 4 days.

DS1 on the other hand had 1 milky bar and quavers and he is 10,

me i had 2 wispas and bought 2 more hee hee

samsonara · 10/12/2008 23:50

Well if you are against fruit shoots Capri sun is good alternative it's in a squiggy pouch and its completely natural ingredients.

nofunanymore · 10/12/2008 23:54

Totally agree with Ledodgy and Goodasgold - aspartame is v nasty and I would choose anything sugary over anything synthetic any day. Aspartame is in most drinks (even so-called 'good for kids' types). Have also seen it in 'full sugar' versions too - beware! Have you actually tasted Fruit Shoots??? The aftertaste is foul.

dobby2001 · 10/12/2008 23:56

trouble is even sugared varieties are starting to have aspartamane in as its cheaper for the manufacturers as then they can add less sugar
