To feel sorry for this DIL even though I've never met her?

I was in a waiting room today when an elderly woman came in.

She saw a dad and toddler and said "how old is he? A year? I shouldn't say this because I'm the MIL but my grandson is just over a year and he still isn't walking, just shuffles along on his bottom. It's not right though..my son tells me to mind my own business..."

Then she sat down and talked to another mum and started showing her some pictures.

She'd apparently arranged a session with a studio photographer and these pictures were the result. They were of the grandson, her son and....err, that's it. No DIL in them at all.

It then turned out the DIL and son had moved away. I wonder why?

DIL, if you're on MN, you have my sincere sympathy.

I'm totally confused here.

If the couple had split up then why would they be posing for portrait photos together?

beanieb · 03/12/2008 20:38

She means the DIL and the woman in the surgery's son perhaps?

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 03/12/2008 20:38

am not sure what you are saying with your OP ...

Lulumama · 03/12/2008 20:39

maybe the pics were after the split?

Lulumama · 03/12/2008 20:40

you are making a mountain out of a molehill

also the DIL might be a cold and nasty woman who kept the MIl at arms length

you just don;t know and can;t take a snapshot of someone;s life and get a true picture IMO

prettybutterfly · 03/12/2008 20:41

Yabu. None of your business really!

BroccoliSpears · 03/12/2008 20:41

No no no - the son and DIL hadn't split up. The son and DIL have moved away from the MIL. Is that right?

Ah, so the old ladies son and her DIL have moved away.

Is this mother-in-law bashing by proxy?

shitehawk · 03/12/2008 20:49

Mind your own business. You know nothing about those people and the reasons for (a) the DIL not being in the photographs (maybe she didn't want to be??) and (b) the couple moving away.

A two minute snapshot tells you jack shit about someone's life.

This woman sounds kind of lonely and I think you might be over-interpreting.

Many mil are really great in what is actually a really difficult position.

I just want to go on record as saying I really rate my mil; she's a great person and v. thoughtful.
