to think that while its fair enough to take stuff out of our skip

Its a bit much to bang on the door, waking the baby, to ask if we are going to throw any more stuff away.

Aparently people make a living getting scrap metal from skips, fair enough, the skip is on the road, we have thrown the stuff away, anyone can take it.

But to bang on the door (waking the baby), to ask if we are going to be throwing more away?

If I had said yes, would he have asked me to keep it for him?

{shock}. That is very unreasonable.

AnguaVonUberwald · 04/11/2008 11:12

I mean seriously! I can see its a hard life, but apparently they can make quite a good living from it, I just can't get over the banging on the door.

Bit much to ask unless you were outside?

We had someone ask for our old garage door, but I was outside at the time.

Would be a bit miffed if someone knocked at the door and I don't have sleeping babies.

ComeOVeneer · 04/11/2008 17:38

We had people shove a load of stuf in our skip at our last house, now that is a cheek!

MaureenMLove · 04/11/2008 17:41

The rag and bone man is a bit keen round our way too. We removed an old dishwasher a while back and stuck it down the side of the house, as it was Saturday night and planned to stick it out front on Monday morning. We had a knock at the door at 8am on Sunday morning, aksing if it was OK to take it! They must have sniffed it out! It was hardly on show and still pretty dark!

AnguaVonUberwald · 04/11/2008 19:16

NO, I was inside with the door closed, I obviously don't mind them taking whats in the tip, it was the really loud banging on the door and then the asking!

I think its a bit

I was doing a house up a few years back and had a new boiler, put the old one outside (was a terraced house with a 5" high wall at the back). Anyway, was sat on the bathroom floor painting, and the rag and bone man stuck his head round the door to ask if he could take it. How the hell he saw it from the alley way I'll never know!

RomanCandleQueen · 04/11/2008 19:36

Sorry, where do you lot live? In the 1960's? I thought rag and bone men were long gone!

twoluvlykids · 04/11/2008 19:38

lol at thought of Stepney and Son!

compo · 04/11/2008 19:39

oh yes we've had this twice
first time when we got double glazing, someone knocked to ask if they could take the old frames

second time was when we had the kitchen done, someone asked if they could take the old cooker

I was glad tbh

ChasingSquirrels · 04/11/2008 19:40

I wish someone would take our old fridge freezer which has been in the front garden for over 2 years - where do you find a rag and bone man??

Threadworrm · 04/11/2008 19:41

A village near where I live still has a rag and bone man with a pony and cart.

2point4kids · 04/11/2008 19:42

Chasing squirrels - the council will take it for a fiver!

ChasingSquirrels · 04/11/2008 19:44

well £20 here, and I know, I just have never got round to sorting it

MelT76 · 04/11/2008 19:48

I was quite glad just that he came into the house!

flowerybeanbag · 04/11/2008 19:54

YANBU. When we had a new kitchen we had a skip for the old one plus any rubbish from installation. It was rarely anywhere near full, it would have a bunch of kitchen cupboards in during the day then be virtually empty again the next morning

We even had a neighbour get a bit irked with us because apparently they could have used the old kitchen cupboards and we should have apparently offered it to them first

SalBySea · 04/11/2008 20:00
  • glad I'm not chasing squirrels neighbour!!

I think that if it was in the day time then fair enough - he didnt know you had a sleeping baby

and wouldnt it be better all round for it to go to a clearance shop or scrap yard than to landfill?

I have a terrible habit of checking out skips but have a gorgous sofa bed our neighbour was chucking out as a result!

pmsl, it's not in the middle of the front garden, it is against the back of the garage, can't be seen by the neighbours. And if you saw our neighbour's garden then you wouldn't think they had a complaining leg to stand on anyway.

Plonker · 04/11/2008 20:08

YANBU

We ordered a skip for a big clear out shortly after dd3 was born. We had one fella knock 3 times for different items, yes 3 times! ...he came back a 4th and knocked on the window - i was and because i was sitting feeding tiny head-bobbing newborn dd at the time and wasn't being as discreet as i would have been if i had been feeding in public.

The cheeky bleeder wanted to know if we were getting rid of any of the block pavers that were at the side of the house (we were re-laying them) as they were just, and i quote "sitting there"

AnguaVonUberwald · 04/11/2008 20:48

SalbySea, but I am not objecting at all to him taking what was in the skip, but to him asking for more, what was I meant to do , hold it for him?

Also it would appear that there is no chance of scrap metal going into land fill around here, when the boiler went in the skip, someone took it within two minutes, so its not like its save it for this guy or it gets dumped!

We had someone knock on our door last week to see if we still wanted the iron gates on our driveway and if not could they have them . I think taking a few bits from a skip is ok but knocking on someone's door is a bit random and not awfully polite.
