Poo poo this and poo poo that

AIBU to shut down my five year old's poo chat and jokes? I know it's developmentally normal to find poo hilarious, but should I redirect him when he makes a "poo poo palace" out of bubbles in the bath or does butt water pistols on his bike (by standing up when pedalling and pointing his bum backwards - admittedly hilarious). I don't want to curtail his attempts at jokes but the poo theme seems a bit strong. Advice welcome!

Either completely ignore it, I mean, no looking at him, no commenting, no telling off at all. Or the complete opposite c and every time he says it say ‘if you’re talking about poo you just need to go to the loo, so this activity is finished now’. And stick to it. Off he goes to the loo and the activity is put away. He’ll soon get understand the connection!

I'm not sure it will anytime soon. My 23 year old is still guaranteed to laugh if you say Poo poo bumhead to him.

PinkViola · 18/10/2026 19:14

I uses to join in and make jokes myself about it to make them laugh. They grew out of it.

OnceUponHalloween · 18/10/2026 19:15

Poo is very funny at his age. Don’t be a killjoy, mummy.

Agatha1989 · 18/10/2026 19:16

Ignore it. He’ll grow out of it. Or he’ll discover Mumsnet one day and become one of the many poo trolls.

ChocolateApples · 18/10/2026 19:17

I'd say ignore over taking to the loo. I wouldn't really want to set up any sort of punishment association. Ignoring just removes the fun.

This is what I'm worried about. Maybe I'm being a fun sponge and actually it's hilarious and I roll with it (not in it)? I just intrinsically feel I should be moderating it but maybe it's fine?
I do say that if he wants to do his butt dance it needs to be fully clothed and only around family...

I laughed along and made poo jokes. By 5 DD was over it.

TimeToStopLurking · 18/10/2026 19:33

I've embraced the poo jokes and joined in. Eg.

Me: What would you like on your toast?
DS4: Poo Poo
Me: Ok. With crunchy bits or a squirty one?

He squeals in delight and we move on.

Sometimes I get a poo joke in first. And just to be clear, I wasn't into poo jokes before he came along but I've rolled with it. It makes him happy and it's contagious.

One day he'll be annoyed by my very presence no doubt but to get a belly laugh out of him is joyful 😊

OnceUponHalloween · 18/10/2026 19:34

It’s fine OP. 😀

FlotsamJetsamsam · 18/10/2026 19:52

The butt water pistol thing is hilarious. Enjoy your silly little weirdo while they're still so little and silly, I say!

I think the examples you gave are pretty harmless. You don’t have to laugh but unless it’s in public or whatever I don’t think you have to tell him off either. I suspect he’ll move on more quickly if it stops getting him attention. You can ignore, or look bored.

Gingerbreadseasoniscoming · 18/10/2026 19:55

Thanks all. I appreciate the sentiment that I am probably being too upright and to rol with it a bit more. He's going to love my retaliatory butt dance 😂

This used to infuriate me far more than it should have done, if I were in the wrong mood. I reminded my daughter (28) recently that we couldn’t drive or walk past Poona Road (nearby) without hysterical laughter and she had absolutely no recollection of the phase. This too shall pass.

Greenmouldycheese · 18/10/2026 20:52

My 4 year old is the same. He thinks bums and poos are hilarious. I've been telling him to stop but I'm not sure if I should ignore instead. I'm assuming it will pass.
