To only feel comfortable in living room with blinds down

Our living room is in the very corner of an 'L' shaped block of flats. With our neighbour's living room immediately on the other corner. So effectively we can look straight into each others living rooms by looking out the window.

Neighbour loves to stand in window looking out and so where I sit on the sofa, I look over and can see her looking. This means I feel like I can be watched at any time. It's really taken comfort out of being in the living room and I can't sit around in my PJs for example.

I've resorted to putting the blinds down whenever I'm sitting to watch tv or similar. DP thinks is stupid and we should just ignore the neighbour.

You can get privacy film to stick on you windows where you can see out but no one can see in.

Id hate that , what were the architects thinking . I wouldn’t close the blinds because I like light but I would investigate a mirror see out but not in screening for the windows .

Buy and install some sheer curtains.

I couldn't bear being in a dim room.

See if doing your morning aerobics naked makes them stop.

Ikea sell long very pleasant plain net curtains for a very reasonable price, just buy some and put them up.

Net curtains are completely see through if there's a light on inside.

I have this argument with DP. We live in a pavement terrace, so anyone walking past is about a foot away from where we sit. He wants the blinds down at all times. I want day light and the view, and as we get about three people walk past each day, on a busy day, and they tend to do that look in then quickly look away when you spot them thing, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as sitting in the semi dark, which depresses me.
Prolonged staring by a neighbour is different though. She is very rude. I think in this situation I'd leave the blinds open, then close them (performatively) when I saw her looking in.

You have to find a middle ground which protects your privacy while still giving you and your dh freedom to feel comfortable in your own home.

Mirror film is a good idea. Are your blinds solid or venetian? You can have venetians down, and angled so that light comes in diagonally, and you can see out diagonally, but nobody can see in horizontally.

Why would the light be on inside in the day?

And at night, surely they close the binds anyway?

Talk about making problems where the simplest solution not only exists, but has existed for decades.

Shit design but I'm sure she's not staring at you, maybe she just likes looking out of the window. But I'm with you, couldn't sit there in darkness all day so I'd get some privacy film

ChapmanFarm · Today 08:47

You can get day and night blinds so you can see out of the transparent part but it's hard to see in.

Sitting with nothing to look out at would drive me mad but there are many solutions as suggested that would give you more privacy without feeling like you are in a box.

You never have a light on during the day? Perhaps when it's dark and overcast? Or because you live in the corner of an L-shaped block of flats and might be in shadow?
