What jobs can I do from home?

Thewaythelighthitsinthemorning · 15/10/2026 17:09

Live abroad but moving back in two years. I'm not proficient enough with the language to get a job here.
Does anyone work online, if so, what do you do, what can I do?
Have even considered getting my feet out, but they're trotters 🤣

The problem you have is that most people who have fully remote jobs (especially from another country) are experts in their sector and have proven themselves to be able to do this.

A fully remote job in a sector with no experience is almost always a scam or non-existent (because otherwise why wouldn't everyone be doing it)

brownbootsandhats · 15/10/2026 17:13

And many companies like you to be in the home country when working from home

My brother teaches English as a foreign language remotely from home. He has another (unusual) language though so catered specifically to that demographic as there was a lot of demand.

I work from home 95%. I'm a freelance designer and cad artist but as pp said. I had 15 years of office working in my field before I was in a position to freelance. In theory I could have done it earlier if I had a really excellent portfolio but that knowledge has been invaluable.

Otherwise - matched betting. Click working and online surveys, phone sex worker.....

I'm in education

On of our DC taught ESL and a Scandinavian language online from home.
DH does a bit of tutoring online (maths) from home.

Check out Twinkl they have remote jobs. I’ve seen lots of jobs in general for online tutors too

The pay always seems low

You aren't going to get a high paid fully remote job without a speciality, experience or very good luck. So yes it's not well paid but it's a job, it's flexible and if you get qualifications you can open further doors or increase pay or go private.

Go private?

I'm well qualified, I don't expect huge pay, but £10 an hour isn't ideal

It does but it's become over-saturated. You could look at Niteflirt though...a lot of women make it work and there's a really good help forum. I was terrible at it and found every call terrifying but you might like it!

You could try this site. I solely WFH but my company don't allow working outside the UK. Out of interest, how are you surviving there? What was your plan when you moved or is someone else supporting you there?

I could only do it in the day when no one is here
What is the pay like and how are you paid?

Dh works and this was our agreement whilst we're here (fairly short term)

What are you good at? Almost anything can be done remotely and also on a self employed basis if you’re good at it.

I was a PhD level clinical researcher for 20 years, working for a university, hybrid for many years and then almost completely remote after COVID. Now I am self-employed in consulting, entirely from home.

Dh runs a fabrication business. He is on site one day a week to supervise employees and do maintenance and things, otherwise works from home.

Start with where your skills are and if you will need to work across time zones, think about how that will work practically with family life.

My experience is all in education, children/childcare and I have done some grammar corrections etc. I enjoy anything to do with writing.

What about becoming a remote Clerk to the Governors? Not sure how time difference would work though. Understanding the education lingo would be a big help. Lots of agencies you could join

am i correct in thinking you’re not a teacher then? Online tutoring can pay £50 an hour and is certainly worth considering if you’re qualified

I'm a teacher, but having looked at agencies, pay is very low. I've never seen £50 per hour

Working for a UK company while living abroad triggers complex tax, social security (National Insurance), and employment law obligations for both you and the employer, depending on where duties are physically performed and your tax residency status. It would be incredibly hard for you to find a job with a company based in the UK when you yourself are not.

clareykb · 15/10/2026 19:24

I used to work for an education resources company from home (the one that sounds like a star) wasn't great pay but wasn't awful I did content writing which am not sure what the state of would be now with AI but there were other jobs too wasn't a good forever job but was fine for what I needed it for (part time when doing my masters) might be an option?
