Sorry, I'm posting on here as I've had no luck in the health topics 😢

I'm on gabapentin 1200mg a day for nerve pain. Was on 900 from April to last week. I walk briskly for half an hour a day, (have done for years) sometimes twice a day and I'm eating the same as I've always done. I can't do any more exercise.

I can't figure out if it's weight or water but I weigh half a stone more than I did when I started on the gabapentin 6 months ago.

Will this carry on the whole time I'm on the medication and how do I counteract the weight gain?

Please, any personal experiences of this? It's getting me down and I've nearly gone up a dress size 😥

Thank you.

I'd be surprised if it were due to Gabapentin.
I was on 1800mg for years and it never affected my weight.

I gained a f**k ton of weight on gabapentin as did a friend of mine. She was able to walk but it didn’t make a lot of difference I can’t (leg is the issue). She also tried to self regulate the dosage and add supplements etc so do not do that it didn’t work and it it didn’t end well. I have had some success with a stress and DC illness meaning I don’t have time to eat much related diet, but it is over all the only medication that has helped so far so I just have to work around that

I have no appetite with it and no money for treats and I gained a lot of weight

I've not any experience of this medication but in 6 months half a stone is quite rapid so I would say it's probably water retention I had a similar problem when I was on onlazapine beacuse I was very skinny to start with I started gaining weight quite rapidly, and when I came off it my weight started coming off.

But medication like this is well known to cause water retention,I'm not a medical expert so I'm just guessing.

If you have sudden unexpected weight gain and bloating, I would advise seeing your GP and maybe getting an abdo scan. Don’t put it all down to the meds. It may just be a coincidence.

Yes I've looked into this but Google said it's more likely to cause water retention in legs and feet not tummy and hips like myself.

How long have you been on it for and has the weight plateaued?

Well this has opened my eyes!
I have been on gabapentin for 6 years, coincided with a very very bad bout of Covid.

i was looking at photos from 2019 and I look so much more healthy.. I don't eat more but I certainly can't move like I could before. I have a three around my middle that will not shift,

oh well, the benefits outweigh the side effects, I was in so much pain before. It's just about liveable with now.

This is the thing isn't it, I was in so much pain too. My clothes are really tight 😪

Its notorious for causing weight gain and actually puts a lot of people off as a result.

Goaliestar · Yesterday 21:03

My friend was on it but stopped it as she gained so much weight.
She was extremely health conscious, no sugar at all, and had gained a good 2 stone. It helped her pain wise but she went off it anyway because of the weight.

I'm not sure what to do. I've only just started on the bigger dose. I can't carry on putting weight on.

I have been taking gabapentin for a while now and have in fact lost weight, which i have been trying to do.
I’d have thought if it predisposed you to weight gain then I would not gave been able to lose much, if any. Not the case.
Certainly my GP never mentioned it as something to watch out for. I think they might have done seeing as I’m on WLIs.

Maddy70 · Yesterday 23:52

I haven't noticed any weight gain on it perhaps due to actual pain you are not as active as you think you are and that's had an effect?

justasking111 · Today 00:00

Waiting for two new hips and stenosis of the spine they put me on gabapentin I actually lost weight because all the painkillers made me so nauseous.
Post two new hips I just have the back pain and have gained weight because I'm hungrier so eating more.
