To take time off work for a kidney infection?

I already had to take time off a few weeks ago so I’m anxious about my attendance and coming across as unreliable to my team. I currently have a kidney infection and I’m on antibiotics. The symptoms fluctuate. At the moment I have nausea, muscle aches and back pain, although earlier this afternoon I was feeling better. I could probably sit at my desk and work if I made myself (and that’s what I did last week before I knew what was wrong) but equally I just want to rest in bed. My energy levels are low. I’m planning on going back to work tomorrow as I thought I was feeling better but I’m starting to feel unwell again. I’m just worried as I’ve had time off sick already recently (I’ve been having what I think is recurrent kidney issues and sickness, maybe from a kidney stone, i’m not sure what’s going on. i’ve been referred to urology).

If you’ve had a kidney infection, how much time off did you need?

You have a kidney infection. Go off sick until you're better. Don't make yourself work you'll just be off longer in the long run as you won't get properly better.

In my experience people with kidney infections are pretty crap at work anyway! So you'll probably make loads of mistakes. Plus do you imagine that work will be paying for your funeral when you work yourself to death? Because they won't.

Just rest in bed and don't worry about work x

I haven’t had a kidney infection since childhood so didn’t have to take time off- but you need to take enough time off to let your body recover! If you go back to work too soon, you’ll not be able to properly get over the infection. Try to take it on a day by day/week by week basis, as necessary.

I didn't take any time off but that was because I was able to sit at my desk and work, just as you could before you found out what it was.

But different people suffer varying levels of pain, so if you really can't work then there's nothing you can do about it.

It's not just about how much pain she's in. It's also about whether going to work will slow her recovery. Sometimes rest is needed to recover faster/better.

Also kidney infections send you doo-lally. I expect the work you did was a bit weird, no offence.

I had a kidney infection in my 20's when working in a hotel, the pain was unbearable but the pressure on me to work meant I did. It delayed my recovery massively and I had to go on a special diet for six months. You are genuinely ill, work will have to deal with it. Your health is far more important. Could you request a phased return when you feel ready? Hope you recover soon I still remember that pain!

I think you mean they ‘can’ send you that way.

This proves my point well.

Not all kidney infections are equal and if the OP feels she cannot work, then of course she should stay home.
