To think British people relentlessly vote against their own interests

A poll bounce for Kemi Badenoch after she vows to abolish inheritance tax

Why the fuck

Almost nobody pays it anyway, it's due after you are dead, meanwhile the 100k income tax distortion is fucking the entire economy and incentivising consultant surgeons to work four day weeks

you could say the same about anyone who votes Green, a weird mix of radical islamists and men who want to subjugate women by dressing up as them.

The reason all political parties are now tits mental is that British people vote against their own interests every single time

I assume it's something to do with our conditioning over the last few decades

"Sure our economy is on the wane and life is worse for everyone than it was twenty years ago including my own immediate family but what about trans people in Gaza that's what really counts"

I don’t think this is just this country that does this

Calenia · 11/10/2026 14:44

Benefit claimants and disabled people voting for Reform is my personal favourite.

We voted for Cameron's austerity, Brexit, May's hostile environment, and Johnson's lies and bluster.

When did we vote for "trans people in Gaza"?

HettyTagliatelli · 11/10/2026 14:48

I agree with your title simply because of Brexit, but I can’t agree with your post.

I don’t like KB but shes right on this. We have billionaires leaving the country, people paying lawyers and taking risks to minimise their inheritance tax liability and high rate taxpayers working part time because it’s not worth their while to work more.

Meanwhile we’re paying people to have children they can’t afford and can’t be bothered to even potty train. It’s a shit show.

BrummieKara · 11/10/2026 14:52

People vote with their feelings not their logical brain. Only a small minority of people look through policies and weigh up which party will be the most beneficial in practice (for either themselves or the country as a whole). Most vote through tribal loyalties, identity politics, which party they instinctively feel is "for" them.

JuliaAgrippina · 11/10/2026 14:54

Everyone does to an extent - but compare to somewhere like US where vast swaths vote against their own best interest just in case they get rich at some point we do better.

It was considered by many outside UK to be odd we voted Churchill out at end - or near end of WW2 - but we got a goverment that set up the wlefare state and did a lot internationally as well.

I think UK bubbles along mostly okay - and electroate understand tatical voting.

I think many confused the situation with party I do not like is in power rather than they have very different priorities to me assume other voters are stupid.

I don’t think many understand the IHT thresholds and think they may in fact pay it

Meadowfinch · 11/10/2026 14:55

Maybe people understand that all wealth in a country comes from business, production and commerce, and they'll vote for whoever they think will deliver a shot in the arm for British business.

The idea that only 10% of estates pay IHT is only half the story. There are many people who focus all their efforts, from the day their mortgage is paid, to diverting money to their children. Setting up pensions for them. Paying their university fees. Giving them house deposits. Running down their own funds to avoid IHT.

Perhaps the people who like KB's proposals are those currently paying for tax advice because they wants to avoid IHT, and would rather be left with more options.

We cant just keep voting ourselves largesse from the treasury and supporting anyone who offers the most benefits. Not without passing an even bigger poison chalice to the next generation, anyway.

Personally as a mother I would rather take the hit now and try to mitigate the economy for my children as adults. Not vote myself comfortable and then pull the drawbridge up.

We have been doing this for too long

I thought current lot just announced ending of triple lock for pesnions in future and plans finally for helping with care costs.

We did try austerity seems to have delayed our economic recovery post finaicla criss compared to countires who did not do it.

I keep reading energy prices are the big issue for industry in UK with some of teh highest domestically and bussiness in world - I'm not against investing in renewables but I do think the current system needs looking at why are we all paying so much.

Countries with good quality of life do not prioritise the whims of billionaires (who aren't paying it either by the way) they prioritise ordinary people.
