To not go on holiday today

I booked a solo holiday to Spain a few months ago, and I’m supposed to be flying out today. Three weeks ago, I got a notice that my tenancy is being terminated. I’ve been here a few years, and it is very much my home, in a place i love with great neighbours. I’ve asked my landlord, who plans to sell, if he will consider selling to me. He is away himself at the moment, and says he will get in touch when he returns in 10 days time. It’s been a stressful few weeks, trying to figure out a plan a and plan b. I woke up this morning and just couldn’t face the packing, air coach, airport, plane for 3+ hours. So I’ve cancelled my trip. I feel relieved. I’m sure people will think I’m daft, but AIBU to have cancelled?

He should absolutely sell to you, it’s the decent thing to do. Be assertive

Blackandyellow65 · 11/10/2026 11:35

I’m not sure how we’re supposed to answer that. If you don’t want to go then you don’t want to go, so it was the right decision for you no matter what anyone else would have done in the same situation

murasaki · 11/10/2026 11:36

Well given you can't do anything for 10 days, I would have gone.

It’s not decent or indecent. He can sell to whoever he likes. It would be a kind thing to do, but he doesn’t owe the op anything. As it is there’s nothing really stopping the op from buying it, unless he’s got a family member or friend wanting it, and assuming he’s priced it reasonably and doesn’t bump it up knowing the op may be desperate enough to pay it

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 11/10/2026 11:39

Not at all unreasonable. A holiday is supposed to be relaxing. if it wouldn't be, for whatever reason, it's not compulsory to go. It might have been more complicated if other people were going but they aren't in this case.

Lomonald · 11/10/2026 11:39

I think yabu , to have cancelled it must be a lot of money to lose, but it is what it is.

i honestly hope you get your house situation sorted out, i think your LL should have come to you first about buying and not be unavailable for 10.days !

Pootles34 · 11/10/2026 11:40

You've cancelled it, it's done now. Use this time to get things in order - arrange a meeting with a mortgage advisor, etc.

leperol · 11/10/2026 11:46

I think I'd have cancelled also. I know there's not much you can do here to hurry things along, but the situation would be on your mind, you didn't want to go, you cancelled, and can now sit back and wait to see what happens with the house. You probably would have been fretting when away anyway.

Good luck with the house, I hope it works out for you.

Barbarella73 · 11/10/2026 11:49

I’ve got my mortgage AIP sorted already.

If I could teleport to Spain I would happily have gone. It’s been an exhausting few weeks and I think I’m just out of steam. Ironically if my landlord does sell to me, I won’t be able to afford another holiday for a VERY long time. Whereas if I have to move, I will move somewhere less expensive and can think about Spain again once I’ve moved.

It is the decent thing to do, it’s her home. It’s not an obligation, but it is the morally decent thing. We all have the opportunity to do better than the bare minimum to our fellow humans

Rainingasusual · 11/10/2026 13:30

You knew your own mental limits and you listened to them. I think that's wise and reasonable.
Hopefully your housing situation gets sorted.

Nofeckingway · 11/10/2026 13:37

Shame to cancel but only you can know if you wouldn't be able to enjoy it . Hope you can get some money back.

Are you sure? Renting is so expensive these days a mortgage might be cheaper. I know it was the case for me a few years ago but I realise a lot has changed in the last 5 years.

how much rent to do you pay and do you know roughly how much it’s worth?

anyway if you are mentally exhausted I don’t blame you for not being able to face the travel to Spain.

I plan to purchase, not rent. It’s just a matter of whether it will be the house I’m currently renting, or another house in a less expensive area. I know how much I can afford to pay for the place I’m renting, but my landlord has a genuine reason for selling (life changing diagnosis for one of his kids) and so he may want to do some cosmetic work on the place after I leave and try and get more on the open market. I just have to wait and see. I’m not worrying about the money I spent on flights and accommodation, that‘s already spent and I think I’ll be happier to spend the ‘limbo’ time while I wait in my home (while I still can!).
Thank you for your kind words ☺️

If you feel relieved about it then YANBU. I do think you could've still gone though. I don't think you've said how long your trip was meant to be but it would probably be a good distraction while you wait for your landlord to confirm if they'll sell to you.

Itiswhysofew · 11/10/2026 15:45

It's ok that you cancelled. You havent done anything wrong. How about a few days away closer to home, if that's possible. Just to give you a change of scenery.

No it’s not, she’s not entitled to the home. Good grief, this entitled attitude always shocks me, he is entitled for sell his property for market value. If the op is able to pay that then he should sell to her as first option, it isn’t about what she can afford it’s about what it is worth.

I disagree with you in so many ways I can’t even be bothered to list them..

AndSoFinally · 11/10/2026 18:56

If you can afford market value/asking price then I don’t understand what there is for him to think about? Why would he not agree to sell to you?

You would be chain free and already know the state of the place inside out so won’t be asking for any last minute reductions after a surprise revelation. He also won’t have to go through the possible issues of removing a tennant or selling with a tennant in situ so the whole thing should go through very quickly. Seems like a win for him!

OP can't make him sell to her. It's silly to tell her to 'be assertive'.

IKR. Some people are so entitled it's not even funny.

Ah sorry op you e had a stressful few weeks.

I get what you mean about not wanting to go because you know youl just be stressing.
I had a holiday last year like that.

something major was happening at home and the last thing o wanted to do was go away although I did and enjoyed the physical rest,my brain was still on constant overtime.

spend the time at home just enjoying the slower days

treat yourself to some nice lunches or coffee out somewhere and re set your mind

i really hope you get the option to buy if you like it there so much.
