AIBU… Genuine mistake

What is the done thing when this situation happens? it was a genuine mistake. Picture of seats attached so you can see our thinking.

We have not been the pictures in over 5 years. Took the kids yesterday. Booked what we thought were back seats, they look like back seats on the pictures.

Film starts. Lady, Man and their child approach us. She says “You’re sat in our seats move.” My husband said “I don’t think we are, opens his phone to find the tickets.” I said what’s the seat number, I check both ends of the isle and they only say numbers not letters. So I came back and said I don’t know what to do. My husband said I’ll go and ask one second. The woman is getting more annoyed by this point. I said he’ll only be a minute. She said you need to move now, I said I can’t move both kids, all our food on my own it’ll only take a minute we genuinely think these are our seats. She starts pointing in my child’s face, whose three, saying move him, he’s in my son’s seat and he’s autistic. It’s my child’s first time at the pictures, it’s dark and there is a strange woman pointing at him telling him to move. He gets upset. Not that this is relevant but I felt like saying so, son is autistic too! Anyway husband returns and says yes we are in the wrong seats. We both apologised while moving the kids and our things.

I understand I was wrong, it was a genuine mistake though, look at the picture would you think these are back seats? Or if you go the pictures a lot is it obvious and we’ve just been really silly. 😂 I genuinely thought we were in the right seats and did everything we could to resolve it quickly.

AIBU would you have moved two young children under 4 if you thought you were right?

They do look like back seats, but as soon as you saw that the row letter didn’t match up you should have moved

cartagenagina · Yesterday 09:52

It’s Row A and I would have thought they were front row seats from the picture.

However, the woman was very rude to you all. I hope you were able to settle down and enjoy the film.

There was no letters on the end of the row just numbers that’s what I went to check that’s why we went and asked.

Sounds confusing all round. So was there more rows than in this picture?

Was there no row letter on the tickets themselves? Really weird that the rows had no letters in the theatre.

Takethehuntingquiche · Yesterday 09:56

No sorry. Those are the front row seats

Lexibletheflexible · Yesterday 09:56

If this is the Odeon cinema, then it clearly shows the Odeon screen at the front when you book. Like a big bix that says Odeon in the front.

At our local Odeon, I'm pretty sure the letters are on the floor at the start of the aisle but it can be tricky to see them in the dark.

ChaChaChaChanges · Yesterday 09:56

They look like front row seats to me, especially being row A. The only thing that seems odd is for the wheelchair-friendly seats to be in the middle of the back row, because they seem more commonly to be at the front. But yes, I would have assumed front row when booking.

PacificState · Yesterday 09:57

It’s a genuine mistake on your part, I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it.

The rows nearest the screen are usually the least popular. If you’re looking at a seating diagram and some of the rows are sold out/nearly sold out, that means they’re the back rows. Just a tip for the future!

I probably wouldn’t have moved immediately if I were you, and I genuinely believed I was in the right place. Weird of the cinema not to put the row letters on!

Voltorb · Yesterday 09:57

I would have thought they were the back row too, even though they are row A because it's usual for the wheelchair spaces to be at the front of the screen and whenever I've booked tickets the screen is at the bottom of the image if that makes sense.

I wouldn't have moved until he'd checked especially as there were no letters or numbers on the seats.

Makebelieveanotherlife · Yesterday 09:57

she was rude to you because how can two adults be incapable of sitting in the right seats.
Surely it tells you A11-14 or something and that’s exactly what you should have looked for. It’s doesn’t matter if it was your first time ever, anywhere you go you look for your seats with the right number.
She clearly booked it with her child’s needs in mind and there you are settled in and taking your time to move. I’ve had this happen many times, people sitting in the wrong seats and ‘confused’ about it.

RikthePoet · Yesterday 09:58

It's no big deal. You made a mistake. She wanted her seat. She could have been a bit more patient. You live and learn.

Lexibletheflexible · Yesterday 09:58

Screen clearly visible

SilenceInside · Yesterday 09:58

Row A is usually at the front in cinemas. Does that page you’ve screenshotted not show where the screen is?

fanumb · Yesterday 09:59

The little seats do look like they’re facing the bottom of the picture, if you haven’t booked the cinema in a while I can understand the mistake, generally speaking the screen will be at the top, and row A should have given it away, but I can understand how the mistake was made!

Rachelshair · Yesterday 09:59

Row A would also mean I'd assume front seats - except the accessible seats are row F, which I'd also assume were front seats (probably because that's where they are in our local cinema). I'm sure when I book online it shows where the screen is. Bit odd they didn't have letters on the stairs.

Lastofthesummerwines · Yesterday 09:59

Why does anyone feel it's acceptable to talk to someone like that . Its rude and honestly society have lost their manners . Why can't we just book a ticket and find a seat . All this booking seats lark causes so much drama. Yes you wasn't in the seat that it said on your ticket but who cares fgs just sit down and watch the film instead of spending 10 mins arguing about where you sit.
This would've pissd me off OP so YANBU.

No ive uploaded one but she cropped out the screen. She might have saw the screen after she booked but she realised at some point she had missed this clue

Legomania · Yesterday 09:59

She shouldn't have been rude but you've also cropped out the cinema screen from the seat booker image which makes it very obvious which end is which

Front seats, row A. And you’ve clearly cropped the huge screen out of the seating plan which is a bit of a giveaway. The woman was rude though!

RikthePoet · Yesterday 10:00

Lexibletheflexible · Yesterday 09:58

Screen clearly visible

It's only clearly visible if you recognise that the rectangle marked Odeon is supposed to be a screen.

It's not blindingly obvious. Easy mistake to make.

Forgedsnak · Yesterday 10:01

She sounds like a very rude woman I think you did the right thing, waiting until your husband had checked before moving

TinyBlueDent · Yesterday 10:01

In theatre seating plans Row A is nearest the stage and the plan layout would have the front row at the bottom of the plan, as if you were looking at the seats from the stage. I would have assumed the row you highlighted was at the back and the cinema had adopted an unusual way of assigning letters to the rows.

JeatherLacket · Yesterday 10:02

Is assume row A was the front row as that's been my experience in all venues with rows like that but i have made a similar mistake when booking seats. Not quite as obvious as mixing up the front and back rows but thinking was booking about 3/4 of the way back and ending up only 1/4 back

The person was rude but you made a genuine mistake, don't give it another thought
