Previous homeowner's relative hanging around the street?

This is weird but please hear me out!

We moved to a new house about 2 months ago. DH, myself, and two children.

The old homeowner moved to a different city and a relative lived with them - they told me while making conversation that the relative was changing jobs and was going to live in a different neighbourhood over an hour away.

The relative was very quiet during viewings and wasn't friendly with us.

I've noticed him 5-10 times now walking along our street or just standing on the corner. He doesn't acknowledge us but does look at us - I have smiled but he doesn't smile back. It's a quiet street in a residential area. It doesn't look like he's visiting anyone.

There's nothing I can do about it, but am I being weird in feeling weird about it?

He's probably feeling sad. I sometimes go and sit outside my nan's house and she died 21 years ago, and obviously there are new tenants.

We have something similar, it’s a neighbours house. It’s going on 5 years now. As far as we know he’s harmless but has some mental health issues. It’s possible it’s the same situation with your guy.

Although it seems at bit weird, unless he interacts with you, I'd would crack on with my life. If you engage with him that might open a can of worms. Obvs, the road is a public space so he can be there if he chooses and if all he's doing is looking/hanging out, there's not much you can do..
I think @VeterinaryCareAssistant has a good take on it. The times are few and far between, but I do sometimes drive past places I have lived for nostalgic reasons.

Have you changed the locks since moving in Op? I would change the barrels asap, if it were me. Just to be on the safe side.

I did this a few weeks ago.

I used to be a lodger in a lovely townhouse in a cul de sac years ago. My old landlord moved recently so I knew I wouldn’t bump into him.

I walked half way down the street (didn’t dare reach the outside of the house) and then I went for a walk like I was retracing my old steps. Brought back a lot of old feelings and I really want to retrace some of my other steps if I ever get the chance.

Nope. He killed someone, they are in the attic and he is waiting for the police to be outside after you find them.

You are right to feel weird because it is weird. Have you changed your locks?

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 10/10/2026 22:34

Make sure the locks are changed and get a ring doorbell.

Trulymadlysheepishly · 10/10/2026 22:37

How old is he, OP?
