Are supermarkets busier these days?

It feels like the supermarkets are SUPER busy these days, queueing and queuing, and just loads of people. Is there a memo I didn't get or something??

Maybe it's just the 2 or 3 I go to 🤷

I think it depends on the supermarket. I popped into our nearest big Tesco last weekend and was horrified by the queues - the queue for the self checkout was like an airline check-in, maybe 30 people snaking right along the shop? And nowhere near enough staffed checkouts either so I left my basket. I won't queue for 15 minutes to buy a couple of candles and some cereal bars but I guess if you have a huge trolley of things you will be more committed to seeing it through so they get away with it.

The local Morrisons is fine though.

I do scan/ shop....refuse to queue at the checkout unloading and repacking!

DH goes to Morrisons first thing on a Saturday morning, around 7.30am, he says it's really quiet then.

It's because supermarkets have drastically reduced the number of staffed checkouts. I do scan and shop and it's fine, but the queues for a manned check out are big

I do scan and shop and never have to wait more than about a minute but there's always a huge queue of people waiting for the 2 open traditional checkouts at both our local Sainsbury's and Tesco.

Its because there is half the staff

That's mainly why I Lidl. In and out in 25 minutes

Our Aldi feels like it's busier too. Long queues when before they weren't.

I think PPs are right, fewer staff.

Not for me - I go mid week evenings and it’s very quiet
