To be worried about these symptoms I've been getting?

For the last few months I have been having pain in the left side of my lower back and nausea and vomiting. It seems to happen for around 3 days and then disappears, only to come back a few weeks later. I haven't been to the GP yet because every time I get around to booking an appointment the pain and nausea has stopped and I start telling myself it wasn't that bad/I'll wait to see if it comes back. Sometimes the pain is felt in my abdomen but it's mainly in my back. I'm waiting for a GP appointment but I'm worried about what it might be. The nausea and vomiting is the worst part. I can't even think about food without gagging. I feel like I have a stomach bug or morning sickness but I don't

Does anyone know what it might be? No chance of pregnancy.

Gall bladder irritation. Could be a stone or just inflamed.

gamerchick · 09/10/2026 12:43

None of us can say, but if it is something like kidney stones, I'd probably get on it before the pain comes and doesn't leave. Please see your GP.

Does the pain radiate anywhere? up toward the shoulder

Is it after youve eaten specific food? Fatty type foods or anything?

Agree it could be gallbladder tyoe pain, something similar

No, the pain doesn't radiate anywhere. There's also no link to eating anything in particular. Food is the only thing that helps the nausea.

But your gall bladder is on the right, in front, just under your ribs. Would there be referred pain in left lower back?

AlwaysExtraHot · 09/10/2026 14:37

See your GP. Doesn't matter if the symptoms have temporarily stopped, especially as you can obviously describe them very well and specifically.

bananamachinewater · 09/10/2026 14:42

Just go to the GP and explain exactly what you've said. It won't necessarily be anything sinister.
Not intended to offend, but are you or have you taken GLP-1's? Or lost a lot of weight recently? Some of it sounds a bit like pancreatitis.

It is, but that's where my dad had pain - he thought it was from slouching against the back of the sofa. No pain in front, only at the back. But his also lead to his liver being quite upset so possibly that was more liver pain rather than the original cause? But something to consider.

It’s not ovulation pain is it? I get this quite bad now I’ve got a bit older. Not every month, but more regularly than I used to. You might have an ovarian cyst or something?

worrieedddd · 09/10/2026 15:42

@bananamachinewater No, no GLP-1s and no recent weight loss.

@CatsForLife I did wonder about ovulation or ovarian cysts. I've had a look at my period tracker and all of the times I've had the pain and nausea it's been just before/around ovulation (aside from one time when I had it just before my period started). The back pain feels higher than I would expect, but I know pain can get referred

Yes, it’s funny because mine goes very much into my back now. TBH, it’s the sort of pain that makes me think I should go to A and E and then it goes and forget about until next time!

There’s not much point asking random people here, the symptoms sounds quite serious as in they are affecting your quality of life & and have been going on for months - get a gp appointment!
If you can’t book one in the next couple of weeks, make an emergency on the day gp appointment (get on the phone when the lines open on Monday) & say to the receptionist that you feel very unwell with abdominal symptoms that are getting much worse.

I’ve been having slightly different but quite bad symptoms for months, it’s taken a while but it’s all being properly investigated. Don’t leave it & then end up regretting it.

I had something similar and although it was never diagnosed my docs suspected something involving ovulation/menstruation/possible-endometrial involvement.

The first time it happened was terrifying and literally sent me to my knees vomiting and crying with pain.

That was when I was in my late 40s and it lasted on and off for about 2 years but never as bad as that first time and my doc kept me well-supplied with prescription painkillers (nothing addictive).

I'm in my early 50s now and still not in menopause but on HRT which seemed to knock it on the head, adding to the idea that it was hormone-related.

worrieedddd · 09/10/2026 19:43

I've rang 111 and I'm waiting for a nurse to call back

I’ve been diagnosed with a kidney infection and have to wait for a scan to see if I have a kidney stone. Started on antibiotics. Surprised as I’ve had no urinary symptoms.

Oh that sounds nasty but at least you’re on the right path now.

Glad it’s getting sorted at least.
i had a kidney infection once and no urinary symptoms either. The doctors kept asking, ‘Are you sure you haven’t got smelly or discoloured wee?’ Yes, honestly, I’m sure!

Pineneedlesandsnow · 10/10/2026 21:41

Op with it statting and stopping over weeks how can it be an infection ? I would have thought an infection gets worse and worse ?
