Stopping Christmas presents with extended family

Money is tight for everyone in my family, the cost of living, increased energy etc etc. Most people are feeling it from some angle.
I have 4 siblings all with children of various ages (0-16 years). We stopped buying for adults years ago but have got for the kids. We have decided that rather than stressing out getting presents for all the kids, we would just focus on our family units. I'm quite relieved about this and they are too. Not buying for 8 other children will mean we can buy a few extra ones for our own kids and control the budget easier. I'm sure there will be a few token Christmas chocolates or cakes made for each other but we are not doing a gift exchange.

My partner mentioned the same for his side and they are really not happy. We've said we'd still buy that side if they are insisting on a gift exchange but unfortunately it won't be much this year. They are talking to us like we're suggesting we cancel Christmas! Maybe it's because we've never put a huge emphasis on gifts even at Christmas and we try and do more as a family in activities etc. The idea has completely offended his side. We were by no means saying to them that they must do the same as my siblings, it was just a suggestion given the current financial climate.

AIBU? Are we ruining Christmas by not having extended family exchanging presents?

Of course you're not ruining Christmas for them. They are being rather grabby

What have they actually said

and who is “they”?

How old are your kids? How old are kids on your DHs side? I can only see a problem if yours are teens and theirs are much younger and they feel they've bought for yours for years.

YANBU. Focusing on your own children is much better. It’s a shame that they don’t feel the same way. I would do as you have said and just buy small gifts. Christmas should be about more that how much we can all spend, but unfortunately that is how it ends up for lots of families each year.

Absolutely focus on your own.

For those that want to give ask for a price limit.

My guess is that have already bought some of the tat (as it usually is) so they can't return it.

Could you agree a price cap for all the kids’ presents? Or say they should all be a book / pre-loved / clothes they actually need etc.?
