Metabolic acidosis?

DS,7, recently spent the night in hospital with a IV 3 days vomiting. Paeds diagnosed gastroenteritis without diarrhoea and Metabolic Acidosis based on his blood gas. Is this something common in children? It’s not something I’ve ever heard of or heard other parents talk about, I’ve always assumed that if they’re taking sips of water they’d be fine! Paeds did take some blood to check Creatine so is that something I should be worried about?

It depends on the cause really. Loss of bicarbonate through severe diarrhoea is one cause of acidosis (bicarbonate or base helps buffer excess acid and keep PH in range).

They’re checking creatinine, I’d assume, because kidney dysfunction is another possible cause of acidosis and creatinine is one way of checking for kidney damage or dysfunction.

I don’t know how common it is - I know this from an academic view but am not a medic - but it’s possible it’s just caused by the gastro.

Thank you @Sunbringer , he had absolutely no diarrhoea at all which is what confused me.
