AIBU to think he’s cheating… gut feelings and anxiety

I’ve been with my fiance for just over 2 years. We’re both mid 30s and live together.

I can’t shake the feeling that he’s being unfaithful. There’s no objective evidence whatsoever but I have this ball of anxiety in my stomach like somethings about to be revealed?

He was having phone calls with a ex-girlfriend of his friend (from high school) as she had moved to our area. This happened in January. In itself there was nothing wrong with it, but it’s the fact he didn’t tell me. He told me that he was going to take me to meet her, and that the conversation had never got to his relationship (eg he didnt tell her about me) but she’d spoken at length about her divorce. I said it was out of character for him but that he was entitled to friends. He blocked her and basically was very apologetic.

Around that time, he had started to act different with me. It was very subtle, but things I used to do that made him laugh he’d find annoying. Sex reduced and arguing increased. It just felt like he couldn’t be bothered with me.

Since then everything just seems awful. If he’s texting on his phone my mind automatically thinks he’s texting another woman. I never verbalise this but it’s horrible to feel that way.

Even coworkers. He’s started talking more and more about his colleague and this just seems very normal to everyone else. But my gut is screaming she’s his type/he fancies her. I have to tell myself to grow up when I’m upset about the contact he has with her.

He also has a 6 year old child, conceived via a one night stand with a woman. That makes me think more and more along the lines of, do you always make rash decisions when it comes to women? Entirely motivated by sex?

His dad also had multiple affairs through his childhood which tore the family apart.

am I just projecting all my feelings onto him? Judging him harshly? I have had therapy and discussed this, I am a fairly self confident person but since January my esteem has been on the floor. Is it game over for our relationship?

I think you should trust your gut feelings .

The thing that really sticks out is that there was a noticeable change in his behaviour.

And if he has had unprotected sex on one night stands in the past then that is definitely indicative if an attitude that doesnt sit well with a responsible attitude to sex and relationships

I don't think you are judging him harshly. I think you are being realistic about the type person he is.

Trust your gut.

CraftySeal · 05/10/2026 16:13

Are you a jealous person? Have you had trust issues in previous relationships, or is this quite new for you and specific to this relationship?

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 05/10/2026 16:13

You're light on describing about the ex-gf and how that came to light and how the conversation went from both sides. So i can't really judge that.

I think you might be wrong about him having an affair and he may just be finding you controlling (if he perceives you policing his conversations).

Either way, and whoever is in the wrong, it's not going to last.

You don't seem to be communicating about what either of you want (you: closeness) and are getting (you: not enough) and that's the death knell in any relationship.

Wave bye-bye

i wouldn’t say I am jealous. My ex partner was friends with his ex, and I became good friends with her. I had no reason to believe he’d be unfaithful. I used to be very secure and confident in who I was as a person, but now not so much.

It’s more the feeling of anxiety in my stomach. It just feels off and I can’t place why. He often says how much he hates cheating/cheaters and I just think… well yeah, everyone does? It doesn’t really need to be a discussion point.

Individually the things you describe could be brushed off but there's too many signs that he's cheating.

It's like a sore throat in itself does not necessarily mean a cold but if you also feel tired... and you're also sneezing... You get my drift.

Snooping is the only way. It's not seen as a good thing to do but you won't get the truth otherwise as cheats gaslight.

Didimum · 05/10/2026 18:33

You shouldn't be having these issues in a relationship that is only 2 years old. Get out now.

TheSlantedOwl · 05/10/2026 18:41

Trust your instincts OP.

Kitkate21 · 05/10/2026 18:51

You are only 24 months in and engaged and living together. How did you find out about the ex gf being in town? Was he honest or did you look at his phone? It sound like you don't trust him and that is pretty much his fault.

Fidgety31 · 05/10/2026 18:55

Trust your gut - it’s rarely wrong .

also - if this woman was a friend of his - why did he block her ? Adults don’t block their mates for no reason surely ?

but overall- no relationship is worth this amount of angst. It’s not going to get better once you’re married - it will just be harder to break free .

this sounds insane, but last night he cut his nails? He’s going for lunch meeting with her today… I feel like he only cuts them to be intimate (sorry tmi)

Trust your instincts. There is an obvious change in the way he treats you that makes you believe that his feelings for you have changed for the worse. You are still in an early 'honeymoon' stage of your relationship where everything should be easy and fun between you. You are feeling anxious and on edge.

He has indulged in risky sexual behaviour in the past which resulted in him becoming a father from a one-night stand. I think that you should believe your gut feeling that things have changed between you and start making plans to split up.

Junglejune · 06/10/2026 13:01

There are too many red flags. If it was an old friend from school why not mention it to you? People who make a point of saying they hate cheats are often cheaters. I never say this because it wouldn’t enter my head as I’ve never cheated.

Also I’ve read on here that a lot of men whose fathers cheated also become cheaters. I think it’s because they unconsciously see it as normal.

Also the fact that he’s withdrawn and you’re feeling insecure when you’re not normally an insecure person is a very red flag.

grinandslothit · 06/10/2026 13:08

His behaviour has changed. He is treating you like he doesn't like you very much anymore. Is cheating the only reason that you would leave him? Isn't being treated poorly by him enough reason to end it with him?

TFImBackIn · 06/10/2026 13:12

I don't like him, OP! I wouldn't trust him at all. Trust your instincts on this one.

Does he see much of his child? Personally I'd avoid anyone with a child unless he had a healthy relationship with his child and his ex, and unless he paid regular child support.

Rosepinks · 06/10/2026 13:50

Please trust your instincts.

You have changed, become less of you you are because of him.

Your anxiety is because you are not listening to your gut which is rightly warning you.

This is not a good decent straight man.

He's sneaky, dishonest and you deserve so much better.

If you were my daughter I would be telling you to get away from him.

A child from a ONS?
Why would you want to be involved at all?

pinksony · 06/10/2026 18:14

I can’t shake the sickly anxiety feeling at all. Like my body is pushing me away from him, I don’t even want to go home!

When the messages with the friends ex-girlfriend came to light he told me he’d work back to earn my trust… but I don’t think that’s happened.

The mentionitus is what stuck out for me. Don’t play the pick me game.
