AIBU to mention late-night bike noise from neighbour's teenager on Facebook?

A family a few doors down has a teenager with SEN who doesn't attend school. He spends a lot of his day riding his bike in loops around the close.

The issue is that recently he’s started doing it late at night (around 11 onwards) outside our front window. His bike brakes have developed a bad screech, and every time he circles and brakes, the noise comes straight through our double glazing. It’s got pretty bad and now it's getting hard to sleep as it's every few minutes.

I don’t want to be that neighbour, and I’m conscious that his parents probably have a lot on their plate. I don’t want to stop him enjoying his bike or burn off energy, but wanted to check,
AIBU to put a post on our group FB page? I don't know which house he lives at, but do want to gently mention the noise? I'll mention he's not able to approached and spoke. To directly, he can be fairly aggressive. I know his parents are on the group. Not sure how to handle it, any advice welcomed!

Could you message his parents directly?

Maisymouse2 · 05/10/2026 06:50

He needs degreaser or new brakes? Offer to fix the bile or help too.
Facebook i would not bother.

Surely you would try speaking to them directly first?! Publicly shaming them seems a strange thing to jump to first if you understand they 'have a lot on their plate'

As it’s October, I imagine the cold and rain might soon solve this problem for you anyway.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/10/2026 06:59

Don't put it on fb, have a conversation with the parents.

Silverbirchleaf · 05/10/2026 07:01

I agree, speak to them directly.

Find the parents on the group and message them directly. Or watch what house he goes back to and go knock on the door. Public post is more likely to cause ill feeling. Hopefully some WD40 will sort out the bike

I think I would mention to his parents if nothing else but for safety he needs new brakes sorted, they only screach when they need fixing and it is dangerous to ride without working brakes so you could start with the safety factor and then mention the noise very late at night is also waking all of you/keeping you awake.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 05/10/2026 12:51

I do not think you should put that on Facebook. Even if you go about it super nicely it will probably be taken the wrong way - there’s no need for this to be public really. Ask around, find out where he lives.

Justbrieme · 05/10/2026 12:59

I don’t know, what age is he?

There is a late teen lad here who shouts and screams at the top of his voice and some of the kids coming and going from school morning and evening feel intimidated by him.

There has been police involvement but the many Facebook confrontations have only served to inform people that yes his parents are aware of his behaviour but as an adult they have no control over him and he is equally aggressive with them at home.

In summary there has been no simple solution to fix the issue. I definitely would not be up for publicly shaming the parents though.

Pootles34 · 05/10/2026 13:03

Are you practical with bikes - would you feel comfortable to show him how to fix the brake issue?

ShitFacedShakespeare · 05/10/2026 13:11

It'd probably be pretty easy to find out where he lives if you tried.

Darragon · 05/10/2026 13:41

How on earth do you know so much about their lives if you don’t know which house they live in??! 🤔

What’s ’so much’? OP said the teen has SEN and doesn’t attend school…. Have I missed something?

nofacenonamenonumber · 05/10/2026 14:56

It would be childish to post about it on a FB group page.
Could some of your behaviour be annoying ?

LetMeGoogleThat · 05/10/2026 15:53

Surely brakes on a pedal bike can't be that loud, through double glazing, to be preventing sleep?
