AIBU to complain about how a high street optician treated me?

Back story is I have a chronic eye condition and I’m on steroid drops more than I’m off them. It gives me crippling headaches - this is an add on to a serious Bowel condition, long story 😞.
i went to a well known high street optician on Friday under the emergency scheme ( basically if you have a flare up between appointments you can go to optician who will refer hospital if needed) anyway I got an appointment and was seen by a senior staff member. He basically said I was too complex and I should get back to my hospital team knowing full well it doesn’t work like that. He could refer me to the emergency eye a&e but he said there was no point I needed my own hospital team. He said I was a uncorn, rare and his staff didn’t know how to deal with me. He also said when I come into the store the staff make the sign if the cross as if I’m the devil. He said if it were him he’d go private.
i left in tears and have since discovered no one else with the same condition is treated like this. It’s played in my mind all weekend and I feel quite upset. He made up his own rules it seems and I feel like complaining. Can anyone relate please 🙏

Really?

I'm an optometrist - I assume that your eye condition is iritis/uvietis. In my area if you had a recurrent condition you would be given the number of the local urgent care centre to come back if you needed to be seen. I have also worked at the hospital too and I know that is how it tends to work there as well.

We only treat conditions within the scope of our practice and I suspect yours is just a bit too complicated. Chronic iritis/ uveitis can cause adhesions on the iris and lens which can cause secondary glaucoma.

You probably just need to be managed in a hospital environment

Fine to tell you that you need hospital-based care because it's too complex for a high street optician... absolutely NOT ok to say this to you.

Is it SpecSavers!?

He absolutely said this and I just accepted it but it’s upset me over the weekend , I already feel enough of a freak after the surgery disabled me, too much to go into onto here, he wasn’t to know that I know but I felt so upset after,

Hi thank you for the comment. I’ve never really had a definitive diagnosis but yes it’s either uveitis or scleritis. The thing is where I live ( wales) the pathway is optician then they refer hospital eye a&e if deemed necessary. He said I should be able to ring ophthalmology and be seen by my team there ( not that I have a team lol), trouble is you can never get through and even if I did they’d probably give me an appointment for a few months time by which time it may well have cleared. I do get I’m complex ( eye problem triggered by abdominal fistula, sepsis and nearly dying) but he knows how the system works and he knows there is a vast shortage of ophthalmologists in my area. Plus he told me to go private which also distressed me. In a perfect world I’d welcome being treated by the hospital but it just doesn’t work like that and he knows that. Respect to your profession but he really upset me .

And that’s why I don’t want to complain, I’m not a confrontational person I want an easy life but it did upset me. I feel enough of a freak after a life time of surgeries without comments like that 😞

Tone is everything though isn't it op?

I think if those things were said, then the liklihood was it was a (misguided, clearly) attempt to be lighthearted in a 'poor you having to come here again' type way.

I think you're being too sensitive. Keep some perspective.

JustWalnut · 05/10/2026 00:46

I have an eye condition and tbh I think he's right. I would always want to see an ophthalmologist with specialist knowledge rather than an A&E doctor or an optometrist.

I am not an optometrist but I would think everything you said, I really don't see what on earth they did wrong and I have no training whatsoever

So basically you'd expect the doctors at your local practice to give you a heart transplant or the builder next door to removate Westminster Abbey. There are specialists for a reason

You've misunderstood what Arlanymor was saying

Dancenation · 05/10/2026 08:57

That sounds horrid OP. Yes complain. And try to find a non-chain to go to if possible.

How did they cause your condition? That would make me want to boycott them for a start.
