Has anyone become allergic to their wedding band/s?!

12 years married and suddenly I cannot wear my engagement ring, wedding band and eternity ring. All white gold.

Every single time I put them on, my skin starts bleeding and cracking, feels like it’s burning and I’m devastated! I’ve never not worn them, even through my pregnancies I managed to keep them on, now I cannot wear them, within 5-6 hours my finger is burning and sore/itchy.

I make sure I dry underneath them every time I wash my hands, I moisturise my hands after my shower every day, I’ve cleaned the rings with jewellery cleaner, I don’t know what it is or what to do?!

Did anyone else experience this? What did you do?

DH suggested getting a new set as now I’m older I prefer yellow gold but I want what I got married with and my eternity ring 😢

I wonder if you could ask a jeweler whether they can be given a coating of something you're not allergic to?

If not perhaps have them made into a necklace where the only parts that touch your skin are coated in hypoallergenic metal.

I had that. I found though if I wore them on different fingers it didn't happen. So when I wear them, I have on on my right hand and one on my left.

I did for a while but then became OK again. Very strange

Yes! My engagement ring is fine, but I’ve had to take my wedding ring off temporarily. I’m pregnant and my wedding ring is a size smaller than my engagement ring, so I wondered if it was because my fingers are fatter atm.

I can’t wear two rings on one hand. I think it traps soap and things no matter how careful I think I’m being.

In the end, I swap between wedding and engagement ring as I fancy. My engagement ring is more of a half eternity anyway so looks fine on its own.

DH had something very similar about 10 years after we married, in the end I got him a palladium wedding ring and he hasn't had trouble since.

Yes, this happened to me for a bit. Also white gold rings. In the end I just had a good break from wearing them. As soon as my skin was totally healed I put them back on and no problems since.

Yes same here.

With white gold it is often coated with rhodium to give it the silvery appearance. That wears off over time exposing the white gold which often contains nickel which people can be allergic to.

How strange, yes, that happened to me this summer, also white gold. My engagement ring is platinum and that's fine, and I also wear my grans gold wedding ring, also fine, but my wedding ring was making my skin red and blistered. Worn it 20 years no problem. I did wonder whether it was the heat, and also I have put on weight so it might be that, but odd to hear it happened to you too - mine has been sitting on the mantelpiece for two months.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 04/10/2026 18:28

I've had this too this summer for the first time (after 15yrs)

IAxolotlQuestions · 04/10/2026 18:29

Yep. Stopped wearing my ring (platinum) eventually. It’s been over a decade, but if I try and put it on, my skin reacts (bumps, itching).

TiredShadows · 04/10/2026 18:36

Yes, I've found over time any hard metal jewellery irritated my skin and made nearby joints ache. I swapped to silicone and that all went away.

WaffleMacGubbins · 05/10/2026 08:18

Yes. I decided it was the SDS in liquid hand wash. I swapped to one that is SDS free and my skin healed.

MagicUser1 · 05/10/2026 08:21

I had a reaction once when I was stung by a bee. And then even after my finger healed, it kept coming back. I took the rings to a jeweller and they cleaned them properly with the high pressure wash thing. I htink little bits of the infection/skin cells or whatever were trapped in the ring. It's been much better snce then. Althugh I still don't wear them overnight.
