AIBU to think allowing a 9 year old to have gel nails is odd?

I popped onto a local Facebook forum this morning to consider placing some items on for free collection.

I saw a post: "Anyone got space to fit a 9 year old in for gel nails today?"

AIBU to thin this is absolutely nuts?

I don’t imagine the chemicals and UV could be good for their little hands. I don’t think they do it that young near me.

😳 I’m sure any legit nail techs would not do this nor be insured to.

There is a poster today discussing her dp’s 6 year old daughter’s WhatsApps messages with her mother’s ex boyfriend.
Nothing surprises me about shit parents anymore.

XenoBitch · 03/10/2026 22:03

Surely it is more suitable and fun to do it home with some nail varnish at that age?

That's what I did, my mum used to get some kids' nail polish from the Avon Lady!

Unless, the child is a nail biter ? and the thought is to try and grow her nails.

It’s common for a lot of girls to get their nails done professionally for Prom when they’re about a year older. As a one off I had no issue with it. My nail tech was insured for this but not acrylics on a child, understandably.

Most schools don’t allow gel nails so I’m not sure why a parent would be asking for this to be done in term time. 9 year old is far too young to be getting shellac regularly.

My granddaughter got her's done at that age, usually it was for something special. She was allowed to spend her own money on it and at 11, now chooses not to, anymore. She did have them done for prom, but has worked out, for herself, it isn't something that she wants to spend on. If your using FB, then you aren't paying nail salon prices.

Seagulldancing · 04/10/2026 11:19

No decent salon would let this happen. Sadly there is a lot of bad ones out there

Denim4ever · 04/10/2026 11:29

Surely no school would allow this

I have a UV machine at home and do my own gels. I had a go with DD’s when she was a bit older, maybe 10/11 (after much badgering, before a holiday). They’d all peeled off within a day or so as I think her nails were too soft. With hindsight, it was poor judgement on my part and I’ve not done them since - she’s nearly 15 now.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 04/10/2026 11:38

The only time I have had gel nails was after an accident when two of my nails were crushed and split down the nail bed. Had gel on those two nails to hold them together while they grew out. It was suggested to me by the nurse doing my stitches. Perhaps it’s something like that? Or a chronic nail biter - DD2 has a friend who bites so much they bleed and it looks v painful. Might not be a child wanting fancy bling nails.

BeSharpHelper · 04/10/2026 11:56

My dd had them done at about that age, maybe a birthday or something , pp is correct they don’t stay on, peel off within hours/days. Nail tech said they dont last because the nails are so soft and they woukd only do them with certain products . It’s not the same as adult nails.

BeSharpHelper · 04/10/2026 11:58

*they don’t use the drill / shaving tool things ( cant remember the name)
