AIBU to cancel the work party after no one signed up?

I organised the office work party. But because I had to complain about a few staff noone has put their name down to attend. Do you think I should wait as we still have time or cancel it?

It would depend why you complained about some of coworkers

hellospring26 · 03/10/2026 21:11

Why did you have to complain?

glendabrownlow · 03/10/2026 21:11

Could you send a blanket email explaining that it will have to be cancelled if people don't sign up, and then if no one does, then yes, cancel. Why did you have to complain about a few staff? Do you think that people are not signing up in protest of what you did?

OrangeFlower14 · 03/10/2026 21:13

What’s the link with you complaining about staff? Maybe it’s being done deliberately.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 03/10/2026 21:14

Huh?
More info needed...

MagneticSquirrel · 03/10/2026 21:14

Not enough detail. How big is the party supposed to be? How many people
did you complain about and what did you complain about? How many reminders have you sent? Do poeple have pay to attend or pay for extra travel/accommodation?

ThatCyanCat · 03/10/2026 21:15

Well... what was the complaint about?

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/10/2026 21:16

You're going to have to tell us why you had to complain about colleagues before we can form an opinion OP.

There are valid complaints, and there are "those" complaints.

Breadcat24 · 03/10/2026 21:17

they do not want to go

Stompythedinosaur · 03/10/2026 21:18

I mean, regardless of the situation I'd cancel if no one signs up. Not sure what else you could do?

bananaboats · 03/10/2026 21:49

Well if no one at all has signed up whats the alternative? Are you going to go on your own?

HeddaGarbled · 03/10/2026 21:53

If it’s a personal protest against you, you’d probably be better off handing the organisation to someone else. It’s possible this is already happening behind your back. I think this probably needs to go to management to sort out.

croisette · 03/10/2026 21:57

We need a bit more to go on OP. Why did you complain about “a few staff”? Was it one incident or multiple? Do you think it’s an intentional boycott? It does seem very early to start recruiting for the Xmas party. It’s barely October.

KilkennyCats · 03/10/2026 21:58

Of course nobody’s going to your party if you’ve raised complaints against half the staff 🙄

SeedsOfReason · 03/10/2026 21:59

I'd cancel and send an email out simply saying: 'Due to lack of interest, this event has been cancelled.'

Then it's up to anyone else if they want to organise something else.

You may have a bigger problem on your hands if staff are genuinely boycotting the event in protest at something you've done.

BigBadPotato · 03/10/2026 22:01

Well, I may be stating the obvious, but without anyone attending, it’s not exactly a party anyway? Hat else can you do but cancel it?!

useyournoodle · 03/10/2026 22:02

Maybe spread the word that you’re not going and there’s money behind the bar. That should do it.

Freshrain · 03/10/2026 22:26

There's no point in starting a thread with so little information and expecting people to be able to offer an opinion.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 03/10/2026 22:30

It's def not too early to start thinking about the staff Christmas party / event, this is what I am doing tomorrow. looking at the options in a certain mile radius prices and availability and menus. Will do a short list and will submit it to everyone for consideration.
It will be booked and deposits paid by Oct 23rd.

Beachhutgirl · 03/10/2026 23:40

I would let people know that you will cancel if not enough people book. Give them a deadline that gives you time to cancel without penalty, explain this, and set the required minimum number for it to go ahead. Then it's up to everyone to decide what they want to do.

When did you tell thrm about it?
How did you tell them about it?
Did you tell them they have to sign up?
Did you tell them when they have to sign up by?
Do they have to contribute, if so how much?
When is it?
How many people?
What else is on at that time?
What type of party?
What commitment do you have to make to the venue?

And a 100 more questions...

JanuaryLove · 04/10/2026 00:03

I mean come on op we are clever but not mind readers!

None of that matters until @KhakiViewer tells us about the complaints she "had to" make.

Her silence is odd, don't you think?

Friendlygingercat · 04/10/2026 00:45

Regardless of workplace relationships with the cost of living people are going to be prioritising spending on their own families and not on people they simply work with. Especially if it involves extra expenditure, travelling and so on. I would send an email announcing cancellation due to lack of interest.

KhakiViewer · 10/10/2026 21:29

I told them it was going to be local and everyone can attend only a small deposit. Buffet not including drinks and a choice of food. As other options where full or overly priced. People have started to put their names up now. Not one group. Sorry for late reply I work shifts.
