Electronics detox in commuting time. WWYD in this scenario?

All staff have a company mobile. Mobile will now have to be locked in drawer or locker for staff who have those or signed in and out. Staff have to go into office daily, but will usually be required to do some work in evenings and on weekends. Personal mobiles are already banned from being used in the office, but the electronics detox means they will no longer be allowed in the office at all. This is also to encourage staff to talk to each other on their way to the station, or on shared parts of the commute. The office is London based, so phone free ticketing alternatives are available. Staff will still be expected to check emails and complete work at home as required. The “ban” also extends to other electronics, so no music, podcasts or kindles. Books are allowed. All staff are expected to comply.

WWYD?
YABU - Great idea / Terrible idea, but I’ll do as asked
YANBU - Terrible idea, but senior management is fixed on it. I’m going to discreetly keep my phone on me.

Lol no

BluebellBeth · 03/10/2026 16:58

How does a phone/tech being banned in the office stop anyone using it on their commute?

notacooldad · 03/10/2026 17:00

A shit idea tbh.
Id be looking for another job if I worked there.

This isn't going to be a twist in the plot and say it is a school and the stuff are really pupils.

KeyWorker · 03/10/2026 17:03

Are you suggesting your employer thinks they can ban you from using your phone on your commute before and after work?

No problem with them saying personal phones are not to be used at your desk/within the office environment but they can’t dictate how you use your personal phone to and from work and during your breaks.

Is the expected checking of emails and completing work at home payed?

MagneticSquirrel · 03/10/2026 17:03

Unless my employer is paying me on my commute they can’t police what I’m doing in my commute including a ban on electronics and forcing me to socialise with other staff!

Also what sort of employer is so anti electronics?🤯

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/10/2026 17:06

This is about schools isn’t it.

Spottedtrain · 03/10/2026 17:13

How do I edit post - HYPOTHETICAL scenario. Yes, it was sparked by a thread about a school.

"Staff will still be expected to check emails and complete work at home as required".

Is this contractual?

"The “ban” also extends to other electronics, so no music, podcasts or kindles".

Every single person needs to declare they have a medical need for headphones, white noise, large print / adjustable font sizes to be able to read or similar - all can be age related rather than a diagnosis of ND.

Fuck your employer. If they are doubling down on this, I'd be polishing up the CV.

ChocolateApples · 03/10/2026 17:17

I do think schools are different from employers because children are under age. Schools do engage with parents about what children do out of school, far more than they control what you do outside of work.

GreenFootstool · 03/10/2026 17:19

Ah, a false equivalence then.

No, this is not comparable with a school.

Adults are at paid work where legal duties by an employer end with the working day.

Wow we never would have guessed

Max247 · 03/10/2026 19:06

Children's minds are not the same as adults and they do not have the ability to moderate like (many?) adults do.

Halepeeny · 03/10/2026 19:33

Edited. I don't think schools should dictate what happens outside school but I have to suck it up.

ColdAsAWitches · 03/10/2026 19:37

No, it's not comparable. It's a shite hypothetical equivalency.

Spottedtrain · 04/10/2026 11:19

It’s a WWYD scenario.
