To ask what you wear if you can’t wear jeans anymore?

I have always worn jeans and now mid 40s suddenly after a summer in shorts I get sore down bellow every time I wear jeans.
I have tried linen trousers but I am only 5 foot 1 and they drown me as do bloomer type trousers.
I am wearing my daughters flared leggings at the moment but they don’t feel me at all.

Any suggestions please?

How about a lovely flanel trousers or a nice chino?
thats my go to in autumn. Or long skirts in jean or pleather? With boots and a lovely knits? Then add a jacket/short coat and you re good to go. At our age - sorry - natural fibres are best. Expensive yes but much kinder in the peri that I am 😉😆----

Your jeans might be fine if you change your underwear. The longer leg shorts are brilliant for under jeans. No rubbing.

IMTHECRAZYOLDLADY · 03/10/2026 15:20

Corduroy trousers are softer I find.

MassiveOvaryaction · 03/10/2026 15:53

Not sure how other trousers would be better than jeans tbh so maybe denim skirt?

amusedpyjamas · 03/10/2026 15:54

Uniqlo jersey barrel trousers are the comfiest and perfect to dress up or down. Available in loads of sizes and length, and a new brushed jersey version, too. I find them a bit warm in summer but perfect in autumn and winter. The shape is flattering on just about anyone, they are roomy but structured and not too pronounced barrel leg, and easy to dress up or down.

I wonder why you've become more sensitive. I'm certainly not wanting to be rude, but have you put on weight perhaps? Jeans are my gauge for weight gain - comfy, comfy, comfy, TOO TIGHT!

I wear dark chinos and cords in winter. They might be more comfortable for you with flatter, less stiff seams at the crotch. M&S have cords in a few shapes and colours now, and thankfully in short leg.

I came on to suggest flared leggings- they sound hideous but actually look quite nice with the right top/shoes. Could you try them with a different outfit to make them feel more like you? I'm sick of being cut in half by my jeans- I have put on some weight though like @PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich said- so hopefully won't be a permanent thing but it's opened my eyes to other types of leg wear!

Other option I'm currently wearing is a pair of wide legs "jeans"- I say "jeans" because the fabric is almost like a heavy linen rather than a denim and the waist is elasticated but they are fairly loose all over so might help?

Look into genitourinary syndrome of the menopause then go to your GP and request vaginal estrogen. Seriously.

GreenSlippers44 · 03/10/2026 16:25

There are so many different fabrics and cuts with jeans that I can’t imagine it’s impossible to find a pair that are wearable. Softer ones made of e.g. tencel? Cotton jeggings? Wide-leg jeans?

Breadcat24 · 03/10/2026 16:34

I too would like an alternative to jeans, as while I love them my dis functional knees dislocate in them if I kneel. My ideal would be a slim jeans fit trouser.
Jeggings are really unflattering on me- too thin material seems too exaggerate every bump- denim used to keep it all flat.

No weight gain, I and I don’t think the jeans rub, it’s just that I need to be able to breathe when I get a flare up.
I don’t know what’s causing the soreness but I had it in the spring and moved into shorts and now I’m back in jeans it’s back.

Get thee to Matalan!

I have the exact same problem. Summer is easy but I don’t know how to dress for winter without denim. I went to Matalan this week and I was spoilt for choice!

Lots of lovely trousers, tailored, smart joggers, super soft ‘denim’ (looks like denim but isn’t). All available in shorter lengths (I’m 5’2).

hby9628 · 03/10/2026 17:59

I wear a lot of these type of barrel leg trousers. I’ve got leopard print, spotty ones, cord ones, denim ones 🤣 they are fab. Great with jumpers, T-shirts or vest tops.

Saint and Sofia have great trousers, very well made and lots of colours.

Yup. It might be nothing to do with jeans, more about loss of oestrogen!

I wear Lululemon work trousers most days. They are smart, comfortable, a good shape, wash well, and dry quickly.
