Name changed for privacy.

seen on LinkedIn today. WTF.

I’d describe myself as feminist but seriously, a man posting about accidentally punching their spouse in the jaw. Cancelled. Possibly arrested. Rightly so.

This is a prominent leader in a sector where it’s absolutely NOT OK. 44,000 followers on LinkedIn - a professional platform.

Yes, you're right (so YANBU) - a man probably would not be treated lightly if he joked about punching his partner, whether it was a 'defensive reflex' or not. I hope I've interpreted your post correctly.

I think maybe the picture hasn’t loaded - yes, that’s exactly what it is!

Took me all of 30 seconds to find her on LinkedIn.

Why haven’t you challenged in the comments of her post?

Because someone senior to me in my organisation has positively reacted to it and I’ll probably lose my job if I do. Again, a double standard because I’d be applauded for speaking out against a man.

I’m not personally ‘connected’ with the poster.

I’m more worried that this reads as though he was actually going to at least pretend to suffocate his partner!

Yep that’s what I got from it too.

I think a woman punching a man who comes towards her face with a plastic bag is completely justified. Instinct kicked in, completely understandable. The difference when the genders are reversed are that in 99.9% of cases the man is stronger so could just restrain the woman, they wouldn't need to hit out to protect themselves.

I don’t understand at all why this is on LinkedIn. Isn’t that for professional networking?

How do you know you’d be applauded for speaking out against a man?

Have you reported it anonymously or do you just want to whinge about women?

😂 Aww.

Sorry. Seriously though, not anymore. It's basically facebook idiocy vs AI now in general

Anyone is allowed to proportionately defend themselves if they are in fear for their life. Women are always on guard a little bit - she saw a man coming at her face with a plastic bag and defended herself.

I've had a couple of boyfriends who I've gone all out to defend myself - one though that tickling was funny, and wouldn't stop even though I was clearly not enjoying it, and another decided that he was going to squeeze a spot and actually put me in a headlock to do it - in each case I used my full strength to try to break free, and in each case failed (and I'm sorry to say, didn't immediately make them exes)

This is why you can't actually have a direct comparison. Any of my exes could restrain me if I went at them. I couldn't have done the same to any of my exes - if one had approached me with a plastic bag stretched towards my face I would have been scared witless, and if they were serious, I would have been highly unlikely to be able to do anything about it.

This woman was lucky that her partner was joking, so her defence wasn't needed. It could have been very much the other way - most women who are murdered are murdered by partners, ex-partners, or family members.

whippersnapper55 · 03/10/2026 17:37

Surely if she thought her partner was about to put a plastic bag over her head, a punch in the gob is justifiable? I'm all for equality and I know that there are women who do mentally and physically abuse their partners, but let's not pretend that it's in equal numbers to men who abuse women! And obviously if a man wanted to physically overpower a woman, he'd likely be more able to do that than a woman trying to physically overpower a man?

I hate the "if it was a man", men murder women and claim rough sex and don't get charged. The TV is full of famous DV offenders. Rooney, the famoususer of prostitutes, has prime slots. The who (Pete Townsend, child abuse images) still toured. As said, she thought that she was about to be assaulted. Most women couldn't kill a man with one punch.
