End of Friendship

At what point do you call an end to a friendship. I have a friend who has been replying to my suggestions to meet up by saying she is very busy with work. I know she is but I also know she doesnt work evenings or weekends.
Do you need a reason or is it just time to accept the situation?

Just leave her a message saying you miss her and to get in touch when she’s free to meet up. Then leave the ball in her court x

Mumsntfan1 · 02/10/2026 17:36

How long has she been busy? 2 weeks? 2 months? 2 years?. Also depends on how long you've been friends and how close.

Pollqueen · 02/10/2026 17:36

So many variables. Does she have young kids/huge family commitments as well as working full time? If not, then she's not into meeting up

This.

Just stop trying to make plans. Either she will contact you or the friendship will fizzle out.

StandFirm · 02/10/2026 17:39

Playing devil's advocate, she may not work on the weekend but she might just be utterly exhausted... I wouldn't take it personally.

Those aren't the only things a person can be busy with. 😅

JudyTeeny · 02/10/2026 17:39

Just take your cue from her, stop contacting her. If she wants to meet she'll be in touch. I had a friend for 20 years who started being a bit funny when I suggested meeting, as though she couldn't be bothered but thought she was forced to. I stopped asking and it was a relief. I don't know if she just didn't like me any more - I hadn't done anything offensive - or if she had better things to do. On the rare occasions I happen to see her, I say hello and leave it there.

Tryagain26 · 02/10/2026 17:42

She probably just is very busy and too tired to go out at the weekend or in the evenings.
I don't think you have to call an end to the friendship I have some friends I don't see for months but they are still friends and when we do manage to meet up we are easy with each other.
Just give her a bit of slack and wait untill she contacts you to meet up.

SumptuousPecanNougat · 02/10/2026 17:44

Some people don't have the energy to meet up during the evening or weekend if they are particularly busy at work. They need that time to themselves to recharge. I would say it depends on what she's been like in the past and what else may be going on in her life at the moment.

I'd ask her to get in touch when she has time and energy to meet up again. If she doesn't ever suggest a time, then you have your answer.

Thank you so much for all the replies. I realise I have been overthinking and if she wants to contact me she will.

I don't tend to end friendships, I just let them ebb and flow.

Seeing someone next weekend I've not seen for 6 years cause they were busy for a few times when I suggested a pint. Bumped into them the other day, and had fun so we'll pick up where we left off for a while.

Exactly this. Sometimes friendships just run their course; even if one isn't ready to call a halt, it takes two to make a friendship work.
She may just have more pressing things to do at the moment; just let her make the next move, if she wants to...she will.

She's rude. Sounds awful.

Yes but there's no denying those things make a massive impact because you can't prioritise things over them. Socialising with other friends isn't always a priority if your other friend is important to you.

Canarymonster · 02/10/2026 19:05

I'd just leave it. don't contact her again and wait for her to contct you

Error404FucksNotFound · 02/10/2026 19:07

I ask twice then leave the ball in their court and don't contact them again unless they get in touch.

nomas · 02/10/2026 19:35

It sounds like it's already ended. Not everything needs a confrontation.

Just delete her number and concentrate on those who make an effort with you.
