Why are girls Halloween costumes so uncomfortable and itchy 😡

DD age 10 is pn the waiting list for autism assessment. She has sensory issues and has relaxed uniform at school as she finds the skirts, trousers and blouses too itchy. She lives in soft jersey and joggers.

She wants to dress up for Halloween but i can’t find a single costume for her age in the girls section which isn’t made of scratchy net material.

Before anyone says anything i know she doesn’t have to dress up. I know she could wear a boys costume (which all seem to be comfortable onesie type clothing). I know she could just go in darl joggers and a witches hat.

But she spends her entire life feeling different to other girls and desperately wants to fit in by looking the same as them. So what will happen is she will wear the horrible itchy scratchy costume, spend all might pulling at it and being uncomfortable then have an epic meltdown when we get home. Same as last year, same as the year before.

AIBU to hate girls fancy dress costumes and the need to be pretty and sparkly above comfort and practicality.

Purpose made fancy dress costumes are all made from crappy material.
Maybe she could get a regular dress from a charity shop and adapt it.

MissChanandlerBonng · 02/10/2026 13:05

I think all Halloween costumes are cheap and scratchy materials.

Needmorelego · 02/10/2026 13:06

The "boys ones" are just as crap to be honest.

Makebelieveanotherlife · 02/10/2026 13:06

You seem to be looking for something to complain about. I’ve just been to Sainsbury and a ton of onesie type girls costumes. A 2 second google will bring up many other stores doing the same.

Yes a bit, because not everyone does find them uncomfortable and impractical.

Your child does, but you don't want to go for the other available options.

You could even dress her in dark clothing, give her a witches hat and make her a cloak out of comfortable material.

Kids Halloween costumes are cheap mass produces shit to keep the costs down.

Premade costumes do tend to be the cheapest scratchiest material. If she wants to be comfortable and practical then Next have some spooky pajamas, or you could get a character onesy. If she wants to be more girlie then get a plain black jersey dress and let her choose her own accessories. If she's got a particular character, theme or style in mind, perhaps we could suggest something.

Cheap and nasty materials!

8TinyToeBeans · 02/10/2026 13:19

A long black dress in a soft cotton (bound to able to find that on Amazon) witches hat and broom…that would be a fine witch outfit. Or you could sew and moons onto a black dress to zazz it up. There’s loads of ways to make a sensory friendly outfit.

I did a homemade witch like this when I was little. I also did ‘wee Willie winkie’ in a cotton nightdress and hat. Anything that you can do yourself because all the cheap Halloween outfits are scratchy trash designed to be worn for a few hours!

I don’t agree with you that the boys aren’t the same, they are. Just put top and leggings under it, I’ve never NOT done that with my girls. They wear it over their clothes.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/10/2026 13:23

Make one. You have plenty of time. I used to do it because I hated all the cheap materials

Adapt whatever clothes she CAN wear.

-Soft, tracksuit or leggings in a light colour with a T-shirt. Splash with red food colouring, rip the edges and some face paint
-soft black dress, broom and witches hat
-Soft leggings/top with a skeleton bones on them, then a mask

What would she like to go as OP?

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 02/10/2026 13:35

YANBU. Usually H&H have a nice range of clothes that are Halloween inspired and would still count as a costume, but which are properly made, comfortable clothes. Vinted might be your friend here too. Hope you find something perfect for her!

YABU

It’ll be cold and dark. If she really wants a cheap costume made from scratchy material, put black leggings and long sleeved t-shirt underneath it.

If not get creative - there’s plenty of time to adapt some charity shop clothes into something more comfortable that fits the brief.

You are also wrong that boys outfits are comfortable. Ours always had to wear something underneath to stop the irritation.

LittlePinkDinosaur · 02/10/2026 16:18

I think youre being a bit unreasonable in your frustration. Boys costumes are just as scratchy and made of nasty cheap material often with velcro fastenings at the neck for added scratch. Girls dresses sometimes just have added net layers. We have had a couple of top and trouser outfits which weren't so bad and i've seen them in both 'boy' and 'girl' designs. (Could just count them as unisex). We also used to just put them on over a dark coloured long sleeved top etc.
