Old friends but nothing in common now

She got in touch after 30 years and we met up a couple of times. Supposed to be having a day out soon and I got a text saying 'you'd better be there'. I found it really rude. I have children all with SEN and Summer was busy and I told her this and yes I did say about meeting the summer but things got hectic and she seemed to accept this, so when she texted are we still doing day out? I said yeah and didnt mention her rude text. I have given her couple of dates I can do but truth is the place we are going is nice but I don't want to go with her. I don't want to meet up. I gave it a go and I am not the same person I was at 17/18. I am not interested. She is nice enough and I can just about enjoy a coffee but found her text rude and her company isn't interesting to me. Do I cancel this upcoming day and give an excuse and block or just go this once and then after avoid all contact?
I don't want to be rude but honestly I don't see a friendship future here? I think the text did it for me too. Having children, and having a busy life now is not the same as being teens again. She also has kids so thought she'd understand.

Just cancel and tell her that you won’t be keeping in touch, but you wish her well. She’s unlikely to want to dig into that, if she does just say you’re very different to who you were back then and you don’t feel any connection.

That’s not rude and won’t leave her hanging.

Yes, say that it's been nice to catch up but you're too busy for any more meet ups, and wish her the best.

I think if you agreed to go with her it’s a bit rude to now turn around and not go. Not sure why you found the text rude, it wouldn’t have crossed my mind. I would have read this as she is eager to see you. Personally I would go one more time and then won’t agree to meet again.

Maybe the text was meant in a jokey way rather than a demand for your attendance? In any event if you've met a few times and aren't feeling any desire to stay in touch I would be inclined to just make an excuse and say you'll be in touch to rearrange ...then block.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 30/09/2026 17:05

I think the text might have been meant jokey but could be interpretation as rude.

If you've already arranged it then I'd go - 30 years you're starting from scratch really so I think only seeing her a couple of times is writing it off quite early. Unless the things you have differences around are extreme and core to your personality (eg one of you shoots big game for a hobby and the other is a vegan and green peace activist) or she has said something really offensive.

If you want to distance yourself after a day out then fair enough

You’re being weird about the text, it was clearly just a joke. But if you don’t want to hang out with someone for whatever reason then it’s super easy to deal with, you simply don’t hang out with them. No need to block them that’s just asking for drama.
