Yes. In 'X' number of years you'll struggle to remember what you saw in them.

Forever is a long time.

It has been 7 years for me from my last relationship and 20 years from my marriage, both trauma bonded and I still have the effects. I no longer feel 'bonded' but I still have some emotional pain and hurt feelings despite the amount of time that has passed.

You again?!

ToKittyornottoKitty · 29/09/2026 20:46

What are you doing to recover from it? Are you seeking professional help yet?

Millytante · 29/09/2026 20:52

Oh good heavens, you really are determined that this split shall remain a mortal wound, a wrench of epic drama.
There is no talking to you, since you are almost luxuriating in the rôle you see yourself playing at the moment.
(If there’s any addiction here, it’s more likely to that vision of yourself. The sorrowing abandoned heart, haunting the Cobb in Lyme Regis)

Mistyglade · 29/09/2026 21:28

Hell yes. Takes a while and concerted effort but yes.

PurpleLovecats · 29/09/2026 21:31

Yes of course you can get over it. You need to put in some effort though.

MajesticWhine · 29/09/2026 21:33

Everyone’s experience is different. There is no “we”. No one can answer a vague question like that.

DarkSunshine · 29/09/2026 21:35

What's the back story to this?

CoddledEgos · 29/09/2026 21:38

Not if you hang around on Mn asking the same question and not taking any steps to recover or seek professional help.

YABU

hope that helps.

The goal is for the whole thing to be less interesting and important than you and your boundaries.

At a certain point you need to be able to say, yes it hurt and part of me misses some of the ways they made me feel, but they didn't meet my standards in several ways so sadly they had to go.

What's the back story to this?

Do an advanced search of the OPs username. She probably won't respond on this post but will post something similar in a few days time

"Trauma bond" usually refers to people who are bonded by having been through something awful (but not caused by them), eg friends who experienced a terrorist attack, siblings who grew up with abusive parents etc. Do you mean you're finding it hard to cut ties with an abuser?
