AIBU to wonder whether the three day emergency advice is serious?

I know I might sound crazy, but is anyone else worrying about all the posts about stockpiling and prepping for 3 days that the government is telling us to do? Is anyone actually taking their advice and buying torches, extra water and wind up radios? I just don’t know whether to take it seriously?

Right, so you’ve gone from Russia isn’t a threat to it’s an insignificant threat in the space of one news story. Do you think there aren’t others?

There will always be low grade espionage and the like going on between countries. But as I’ve said before, prep all you like if it helps you manage the anxiety. I can’t see any harm in it.

What are you on about? You’ve gone from denying that Russia is any threat to suggesting that the threat it poses is normal espionage. Next you’ll be admitting that Russia definitely plans to attack a NATO country but it’s nothing to worry your pretty little head about.

I don't understand how anyone doesn't have 3 days of food in the house. I guess we could eat well for a week without going shopping and eat for a month or more just short of fresh veg. Do people really shop every day?

You are right most people even the majority of those struggling financially likely to have three days food

I think having three days water especially if a large family is more of an issue. Also being able to charge phones or having a radio to know what is happening in some scenarios.

A supercharged el nino and flooding is coming. December will be the worst month. There may be power cuts as a result.

HoraceCope · 27/09/2026 17:44

is it december though? in the UK?

I think spending too much time online can lead people to massively overestimate things, leading to fear and anxiety. Russia is not going to invade us, or bomb ius, or destroy our infrastructure. There are of course plenty of realistic concerns like storms and flooding etc. preparing for those is just normal adulting.

99% of people have a torch on their phone these days

And how long will that last with no electricity?

I mean, Russia just attempted a drone attack on Leipzig airport and Iran have just apparently tried to blow up an RAF base but sure, those concerns aren't realistic Hmm

My feeling is if emergency stock piles are needed beyond what I have in cupboards, then it will be a lot more than 3 days.

So I'm not worrying.

@LilyBunch25 how are you stockpiling medications? Not relevant if not taking daily ones.

My DH has had 2 strokes and has other conditions requiring daily prescription medication. Discussion with his GP was followed by issue of an extra 14 days of all in addition to his usual monthly prescription, in case of emergency when we had a family emergency a few months ago. It wasn't needed so was stored and practice pharmacist when I contacted them said this was fine, they will continue with the usual monthly cycle so we have the additional 2 weeks worth in hand.

I agree, not very long but maybe it explains why lots of people don't have torches at home.

yes, it’s those pesky Russians again.

I don't see any humour in this. Having worked with several displaced and bereaved Ukrainians I actually don't find it funny at all.

My car would keep our phones charged for weeks 😂

I don't have anxiety nor do I think the other poster does. You may think your rather patronising comments are ok, after all you've repeated the 'anxiety' theory several times. Personally I find them unnecessary 🤷‍♀️

Yes we have Ukrainian friends and took in two of them for the first 18 months of the conflict. It has no relevance whatsoever to whether Russia is a realistic threat to the UK. So please feel free to dismount from that high horse you’re riding.

But it’s just a fact that we have a major problem with anxiety in our society and people going down prepping rabbit holes online probably isn’t helping with that.

Especially when paired with the patronising tone of “if you’re not preparing like this you’re a thickie who doesn’t know anything about world events and is a scrounge on the state” way go make slightly anxious people feel like utter crap

You know absolutely nothing about Russia, then. They aren't going to bomb us, no. They don't need to do that to destroy our infrastructure, nor can they afford to either politically or financially due to their heavy losses in Ukraine. Every single week they are in our waters looking to damage cable networks, and countless cyber attacks take place every month that are a constant battle for those who have to protect us from them. You seem to think that anyone who understands the threat of non combative aggression is a conspiracy theory nut. Healthy debate is fine, and to agree to disagree, but your ridiculous blanket denial, if shared by everyone else, would actually be dangerous and is why too many people allegedly good at 'adulting' will be the ones who cause additional strain on services when they could have just quietly been a bit more sensible and a little less hand-wringing about the whole thing.

Young people aren't anxious because of emergency preparedness. It's far more likely to be down to the constant over analysing of what other people are doing.

I’ve already said that basic preparedness is sensible - it’s just common sense. I disagree with the panic going on over the Russia threat. We’ll just have to disagree on that!
