Does it piss anybody else off when a colleague says hello/good morning in Teams and then waits for you to respond before telling you what they want?

It's infuriating!

What’s not cute? Having a crap memory?

Saying hi and waiting for a response. Ok to do to friends but not colleagues who need to be getting on with their day.

I’m senior in the organisation and petty.

If I have to waste my time checking people’s status for their preferred communications style, then they are getting a formal email and a task with a deadline, rather than the casual request for a quick chat that was going to follow my “hello”.

Things that have annoyed me in teams today
Annoying person Hi Boardwalk
me hi x, how you doing? what’s up what do you need?
Annoying person Hi Boardwalk

then nothing else for 60 mins then they asked me a stupid question. They’ll be going in the bin next time

I am more irritated when a colleague asks on Teams chat message if we can have a chat about such and such without then following it up with a call or meeting invite. As if they’re waiting for me to then put something in the diary or make the call. You want to talk about something - fine but you ring me.

why would you ignore someone saying hi, how are you? No wonder they didn’t follow up! Just say hi, how can I help?

This thread is just full of want to be performative Victor Meldrews who probably don't act the way in work they pretend to do online...or are the ones that say "I'm just here to work" then make huge threads complaining no one invited them to the pub when the team went after work

Idontjetwashthefucker · Yesterday 22:19

I had a message from a colleague at 7.30 this morning "can you please clarify something for me please?" and then didn't say what...i made a bet with my other colleague on how long it would take her to ask the actual question. I said lunchtime, I was wrong, 4.30 she asked the bloody question

FateAmenableToChange · Yesterday 22:34

I would never have said this was annoying, until someone i worked with started sending these...

Hiya
How are you?

Two separate messages. So Id reply 'good thanks how are you', and then nothing back for hours .... ARRRGGGH

It felt like a total power play. It interrupted my flow and focus for nothing. And I didnt even like this vacuous woman to start with and had zero interest in her day.

Now anything like it gives me the rage and I completely ignore it. Not quite at the #nohello status message yet, but i do respect it.

I understand why you want the details in the first message, but equally if you aren’t available either:

Dont reply until you are

or

Reply. “Well thanks, apologies, on a call just now, drop me a note with what you need and I’ll get back to you.

Edited

Well yes but posters were saying that it’s rude to just not reply!

Which is exactly what I’d do because if somebody wand something from me they need to put the effort in to tell me what that is, I’m not chasing them to find out what!?

I hate the opening line with . Hi HellsBells, hope your OK.. Groan. I never start my message with that as it's insincere, do you really want to know how I am ...

But when you meet someone in real life, face to face...
I might introduce you to Charlie: "Hi Hells Bells, this is Charlie who lives just round the corner from you"
Charlie says "Hi Hells Bells, how are you doing?"

He doesn't care how you are; it's a social nicety, demonstrating that he's friendly. Our social routines are full of little markers like that, sending messages that are different from what the literal words mean.

If you reply with silence, waiting for him to say something interesting or to ask you a question that you deem is worthy of a response, he's going to think you're a stone cold bitch. And then, should you discover that maybe he is interesting after all, or you want to borrow his lawn mower, you're likely to find he's turned into a stone cold bitch as well. That's how life works

The efficient folks write “Hi, hope you are well. I was looking for an update on X as we are going live next week. Please can you let me know when you have a minute.” This is brilliant because I can read this without showing that I’ve read it and then reply in a single message with my response. Simple elegant and efficient.

others go ‘hiya’ and then say nothing. If I say Hi then they chat, if I don’t then I’m cold. Can’t win! What was the main ask - get to it!!!!
