To think hotel designers should at least have once slept in a room before being allowed to design a room.

I travel a lot for work and for pleasure.

I know I'm a particular sort of person buy Yegods some of the room I've stayed in at complete abs utter shite designed by people who I don't think have ever slept I. A room ever on their whole life ever, not once.

A bathroom light that comes on by sensor as you open the door. Nay, not A bathroom light, four lights. 3am snoozy wee completely brightened like the sun. No chance of just meandering back in my slightly soporific stupor.

And more poor DH who didn't even need to be awake now has frazzled corneas.

Light switches that you can't reach from prone in bed. What the warrant feck.

A kettle that yiu can't boil at the same time as watching tv because of the situation of sockets.

A 12foot by 8 foot plate glass window opposite my bed looking out into a communal outdoor space. Felt like investing in a red bulb for that hotel.

Lights choice? 13 spotlights and 2 side lights. Or nothing. No in between.

A very very stylish en suite in an historic building which was just a stone wall 2/3 of the height of the room. No ceiling to it. All ablution noise audible throughout the room. Married 35 years but, nope I'd rather not hear That tyfvfm.

A door that only locks from a single key from outside the room. So if one of use goes out for a bit, the other has to remain locked in. Or unlocked, compromising safety.

No handheld shower, and no shower cap provided. Nope I don't want my hair washed every time I shower thank you.

Had held showers with no parking location so it's a one handed shower for me, generally resulting in a soaked bathroom ffffs.

No socket near the bed.

No food on a Sunday evening.

No physical chain or bolt in the inside of the door.

A chair in the route from my side of the bed to the en suite. I'm sure I've broken toes in this scenario.

Every hotel employee should be forced to spend a nice in each room to check for smooth sailing.

Agree with your list.

Also, surely someone could design smoke detectors without those little red flashing lights that are always put just above your head.

And handheld showers should be obligatory. Lost count of the number of times there’s just been a fixed shower - you end up being a contortionist just to wash properly.

Glass bathroom walls are the worst of the dumb trends.

and any kind of automatic lighting

NameChangeScot · Yesterday 21:37

And it's either hotter than the sun itself or like sleeping in an ice box. No in-between.

JustWalnut · Yesterday 21:37

No sockets by the bed is the most annoying thing!

It's a bit weird not to wash your hair every time you shower though. If you don't, you should take your own shower cap.

Paper thin walls and floors / ceilings

Interlocking doors when you don’t want them

I’ve just come back from a hotel stay luckily only overnight

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 21:38

Manual lighting is also hopeless, it's impossible to get them all off or on as you want them.

Most hotel rooms are now too dark, even within dozens of light bulbs.

The shelf for toiletries is under the shower when it needs to be at the other end of the cubicle so you can get to them while your conditioner is on without it being rinsed off.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · Yesterday 21:41

No air con and a window that only opens a crack. Ffs.

wotsitallfor · Yesterday 21:41

Never enough hooks. Just been in hotel with plush shower and bath, double sink and nowhere for hand towel or wet bath towels!

Missymarple · Yesterday 21:42

Can they also have a snorer put in the room next door, 2 inches sawn off the bottom of the door to the corridor, and a loud talker on the phone marching up and down said corridor all night long. Just so they get the full audio visual effect of their incredible design.

Or just admit the design is shit and supply every room with decent headphones, earplugs and eye masks.

CheeryOchreCat · Yesterday 21:44

Curtains that don’t actually block out any light. So you have the streetlights shining in, then (depending on the time of year) sunlight from
4am 🫩

MiddleAgedDread · Yesterday 21:44

Oh yes I have found my people!!
adding:
nowhere to hang towels up and nowhere to put your wash bag in the bathroom
stupidly small bath towels
no coat hooks - wardrobes are great but not when when you’ve got a wet coat!
twin rooms where the two beds are pushed up to each other so you might as well be sharing a double.
and why do the kettles take so long to boil even though they’re a third of the size of a normal kettle??

stillawip · Yesterday 21:45

Wardrobes that are only long enough for children’s or men’s clothes, not a female grown up who might have bought a maxi dress with her…..

MrsPapillon · Yesterday 21:45

No socket within metres of the only mirror, making hairstyling an impossibility.

‘Accessible’ rooms that only have a shower over the bath. Or a good walk-in shower and a shower stool, but no shelf to put your toiletries on. You literally have to put them on the floor, which is a nightmare if you can’t bend down.

Things like mirrors all at wheelchair height, meaning DH has to get on his knees in front of the sink to have a shave. It’s not beyond the wit of man to provide an adjustable mirror. Or maybe designers believe disabled people always come in pairs.

I only wash my hair every other day and so do a lot of people I suspect.
Not everyone has the time or money to wash hair daily.

PollyBell · Yesterday 21:46

And there should be a rule practical comea first ie bedside table to cover all people in a bed, decent size cups and glasses, sockets by the bed, room to hang all towels, built in toiletry dispenser, way to open windows a little, tv can be moved to cover as many people sat or in bed as possible

My list, will have been covered

Lifesyoungdream · Yesterday 21:46

No shelves in the bathroom to put your toiletries.Mirrors miles away from sockets if you want to blow dry your hair. Only one socket in a room behind a wardrobe.I could go on but I’m actually in a hotel room that’s not so bad.😀

It takes my hair hours to naturally dry and about 20 mins min to blow dry I don’t have time for that! Also it’s really bad for your Hair to wash it every day!

Out of interest, how old are you and how long is your hair? As I’ve aged my hair/scalp isn’t at all greasy. I wash it at most once a week. If I wash it more then it gets totally fluffy and staticky.

MrsPapillon · Yesterday 21:49

Oh and the shampoo/body wash dispensers are always right up the wall which is great if you’re having a shower but infuriating if you’re having a bath and have to keep standing up to retrieve every pump of body wash.

Foxybyname · Yesterday 21:50

Agree with most of your list, and adding:

Socket next to a mirror
Hand held shower , and no it's not weird as a PP has said to not wash your hair every time you shower!

Why is it weird? Hair doesn’t need washing daily

I don’t think I know anyone who washed their hair everyday. It’s really not at all weird to shower and not wash your hair.
