To think fruit shoots are okay for 6-7 year olds?

...or do i need to find a healthier option? This is for DD's 7th party next week. Self catered, 25 x 6-7 year olds (most of them still 6). No access to drinking water due to venue location. I'm taking usual kids party food - ham / cheese sandwiches, cheese, fruit & veg platters, mini sausages etc. I'm struggling for drinks as will be unable to do the usual jugs of squash/water. So I'm looking for a pre-packed option. Will get bottles of water but a bit boring to have that as the only option at a kids party, so would like the kids to have an option of a flavoured drink - are fruit shoots okay to give out to all the kids or will the other parents judge? I know actual fruit juice cartons may be better - but serving, actual fruit, cake and sweet cones, so ideally the drink will be lower sugar. fruit shoots are what I'm thinking....

Innocent Smoothies/Juices: Contain about 10g to 13g of sugar per 100ml (roughly 15g to 26g+ per serving, depending on the bottle size), mostly natural fruit sugars. 1]

Fruit Shoot (Original/Juiced): Contains around 2.2g to 4g of sugar per 100ml (about 4.4g to 15g per 200ml bottle, depending on the specific sub-brand), and their "Hydro" or zero-added-sugar ranges have even less.1]

We get the Tesco flavoured water ones rather than the actual fruit shoots, but yeah, it should be fine!

Allisnotlost1 · 21/09/2026 16:08

People are feeding children processed pork and yet worrying about a fruit shoot??

TheChosenTwo · 21/09/2026 16:11

I didn’t give my dc drinks besides water and milk at home when they were small but was totally happy for them to drink stuff like fruit shoots at parties or when out for lunch/dinner etc because they were occasional.
I’d take a load of bottled water but also bring the fruit shoots.

Moonnstarz · 21/09/2026 16:11

It's fine but you might need to anticipate buying each child 2-3 depending on the activity. I once bought fruit shoots for a party thinking they would have them when it was food time..of course some kids immediately started asking for a drink.

You could keep empty squash bottles and make them up in advance and take paper cups.

Fruit shoots are gross. I buy innocent smoothie multipacks for parties.

Hilarious. This is what keeps me on Mumsnet.

BlackCatBea · 21/09/2026 16:17

You are massively over thinking it! Fruit shoots are fine for a party!
expensive through you’ll need 2 or 3 of the 24 packs.
or add blackcurrant /orange squash to big bottles of water in advance and take some paper cups for a cheaper option

NoKnit · 21/09/2026 16:21

What about few big bottles of fizzy water and paper cups or reusable cuos you just take home to wash?

CremeDeMure · 21/09/2026 16:30

This is like the olden days of MN. Haven't seen a Fruit Shoot thread in a good 10 years!

Hard hats on for all the posts accusing you of poisoning the little children.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 21/09/2026 16:40

Fruit shoot is absolutely fine. The only objection I'd have is the single use plastic bottles. If it was me I'd bring 2 jugs, a bottle of orange and blackcurrant squash and lots of cups. I can guarantee some kids will complain about the flavour so they can have a choice. You'll need to bring a bit container of water so maybe that counteracts the plastic argument. Don't go for straws unless you bring a supply of reusable ones too as the juice box ones go soggy or break.

Lmnop22 · 21/09/2026 19:46

Yes fruit shoots are fine.

Although when I did them at my DS’s party last year someone insisted I went and got water for their kid as he didn’t drink them so I ended up at a vending machine buying water so maybe have both

BogRollBOGOF · 21/09/2026 20:12

Water and fruit shoots are fine.

Fruit shoots are just little bottles of Robinsons squash. Personally I don't like Robinsons because all their products are ruined with artificial sweeteners, but so is most squash, and most children won't be intolerant to it or care about it. It's a normal thing to have at a children's party.

Bloau · 21/09/2026 20:18

Children in the very middle class, middle of the road town where I live are always having parties with own-brand fruit shoots for around age 5-9. It's completely normal. Just have small bottles of water too as not all children drink juice (sorry can't think of the right word here but in Scotland we'd call a fruit shoot juice). I'd only judge if there was literally no water on offer at all.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 21/09/2026 15:27

I would just do cartons of juice.

Yes this.

TheProvincialLady · 21/09/2026 20:21

This thread makes me feel nostalgic. Back in the day there would be at least 3 threads a day on MN about whether Fruit Shoots are acceptable. Haven’t seen one for years.

ShakingAndCrying · 21/09/2026 20:37

Have you lost your mind?! Why don’t you just feed them poison and be done with it?

When I have parties I take a wheelbarrow full of organic oranges and squeeze them fresh or Strawberries and Mangos (organic obviously) and a blender and make smoothies.

Your party food sounds completely unhealthy as well.
I would do home made humous and crudities, seaweed, honey and oat balls, kale chips, Edamame beans and raw bran in yogurt or oatmeal smoothies - it doesn’t taste pleasant but is super healthy for little tummies.

I hope you aren’t giving out party bags and sending them home with seeds in a paper bag and home made date and coconut birthday cake as it’s far more appropriate then bags of tat.

user293948849167 · 21/09/2026 21:35

It’s fine at a party at that age.
Take some bottled water too so there’s a choice if anyone objects.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/09/2026 21:44

I’ve provided fruit shoots and little water bottles for parties so they can choose

Mincepiesnow · 21/09/2026 21:50

Meh it's fine for a party. Most parents are just grateful to have their kid entertained, fed and watered for a couple of hours. They'll always be one or two of "those" types of parents who judge - ignore those petty, ungrateful fuckers.

Bournetilly · 21/09/2026 21:59

Absolutely fine. My DC just turned 7 and still drinks fruit shoots although prefers more ‘grown up’ drinks now. I’d probably go with juice cartons, the big T cup drinks someone has posted are probably better and cheaper.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 21/09/2026 22:20

Some kids have a bad reaction to them and wet pants even well after potty training so I would avoid to be honest…

Fruit shoots are gross. I buy innocent smoothie multipacks for parties.

Smoothies are overpriced and full of sugar.

SALaw · 21/09/2026 22:23

It was cans of Tizer and Vimto back in our day

calmorcrazy · 21/09/2026 22:25

I’d get the fruit shoots you say and also some plain and flavoured waters for kids.

At that age mine only drank water and would refuse any type of squash or fruit shoot but I always carried my own waters to parties as I know people presume kids prefer the flavours!

Are there hot drinks for grown ups?
if not maybe get some big 500ml waters. Fair enough not giving adults food but I think it’s only fair to offer water- Asda do cheap trays.

CrayonCritic · 21/09/2026 23:51

ChocolateApples · 21/09/2026 15:06

You can make up the squash on advance in the big water bottle. No jugs needed. Although you would need cups. But likely cheaper than fruit shoot and pretty much the same thing.

Exactly. Why are you overthinking it 😆
